The Agriculture Subject Educator I is primarily responsible for the organization and delivery of educational workshops, trainings, and technical assistance to farmers, producers, and consumers in the areas of agricultural production practices, farm and food safety, natural resources, climate smart farming, and best farm management practices. The educator works as part of a team, collaborating with Association, regional and statewide professional staff and volunteers in the areas of agriculture and animal science to meet the needs of the Madison County agricultural community. The Educator will serve as a member of the Agriculture team to assist with delivery, management, and coordination in the area of agriculture programming and agriculture economic development. The educator receives direct supervision from the Ag Business Management and Marketing Specialist who provides oversight of the Association Ag. Team. Required QualificationsBachelor of Arts or Science Degree in an agriculture, animal science or related field plus experience relevant the role of the position. Associate's degree in a related agriculture field and at least 2 years related work or volunteer experience may substitute for a Bachelor's Degree. Ability to teach evidence-based agriculture education and curricula to participants and work with diverse audiences of all ages. Proficiency in the use of modern electronic technology and software (e.g., video, audio, computers, texting, Microsoft Office Programs, social media, internet and database software, etc.) Ability to work independently and to effectively participate in professional team efforts. Ability to read and write in English. Must be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to plan and organize work responsibilities according to priorities developed with team members and immediate supervisor. Ability to meet frequent travel requirements associated with this position. A valid NYS driver's license with the ability to drive and driving record acceptable for agency insurance coverage are required. Ability to work flexible hours which may include evenings and/or weekends, and occasional overnight travel. Ability to frequently move/transport supplies and equipment, including climbing stairs and/or in outdoor/agricultural settings with or without reasonable accommodation.
Preferred Qualifications Familiarity with Madison County and ability to utilize program resources within the community. Familiarity with a variety of program delivery methods to reach individuals and groups and ability to integrate adult development principles into educational activities. Ability to speak, read and write proficiently in the Spanish language.
Position Responsibilities & Essential FunctionsProgram Delivery - 70% Deliver educational programs related to production agriculture. Utilize existing evidence-based or approved curricula and support materials to provide accurate agricultural education. Teach the existing educational program as defined. May occasionally apply established subject matter knowledge to create lesson plans to deliver educational program. Serve as subject matter resource in discipline; provide standard responses. May assist in providing moderately complex nonstandard responses. Under the existing program parameters, observe participants and provide positive feedback in an effort to encourage adoption of new practices and/or skills. Meets or exceeds targeted program delivery goals assigned by the Supervisor. Assist the Supervisor to help ensure program delivery is within the Plan of Work as designated by the program and funder requirements. Utilize motivational communication and teaching strategies in working with all participants. Utilize established program outline; provide individualized education and development of farm plans that result in improved business and farm efficiencies. Foster acceptance of program, methods and policies to address community and individual needs and consider diverse audiences. Provide educational program efforts via mass media (including social and print media). Provide special educational efforts as needed and is appropriate in the community. Maintain a strong, supportive, and professional relationship with program participants and have the ability to communicate with participants on a wide range of agricultural issues. Represent CCE to the public, community leaders, government officials and Cornell University in a professional manner. Participate in outreach activities, collaborate with other organizations to help ensure that program participants have access to other appropriate community services. May be involved in multidisciplinary team efforts to deliver program. Utilize a variety of proven educational methodologies. May assist in teaching innovative educational programs. May assist in multi-association team efforts to deliver program.
Program Evaluation - 5% Interact with program participants, advisory committees, Cornell program specialists and faculty, county and community leaders to obtain evaluation data for programs. Implement program evaluation as designed. Based on established parameters, provide program evaluation data to the program supervisor, assist in data analysis and assist in making recommendations to supervisor for strengthening and improving programs.
Administrative Direction - 5% May provide low-complexity administrative tasks to plan the educational program. May provide delivery feasibility details as input to program leaders to assist in planning the delivery of established agricultural educational program goals. Provide input in planning the structure of delivering agricultural educational programs via various methods.
Administrative Management - 5% Solve problems and resolve conflicts that arise in the operation of the agricultural programming in Madison County utilizing appropriate policies and procedures with guidance from the Supervisor. Manage volunteers and provide guidance to fellow staff about agricultural programming goals and delivery methods. Collaborates with Supervisor on the management of the program within the Association. Assist with Open Farm Day volunteer recruitment and involvement.
Administrative Coordination/Operation - 10% Maintain record of participants, complete reports, and accurately collect and prepare paperwork as required for the program evaluation process. Recruit program participants. Complete necessary written documentation as required by programs and funders. Submit program related expense receipts for recording. Organize a weekly program schedule to accommodate needs of participants and the Association. On a frequent basis transports self, also carrying program materials and resources to participant farms and additional community based settings. May assist in the development of marketing materials for educational events Assist supervisor with public awareness in the form of impact statements, articles for progress/ annual reports, or news releases. Serves as the primary staff contact for agricultural programming for CCE of Madison County. Make referrals to appropriate partners internally and externally as needed. Maintain a strong network of peers working in other community agencies and programs with the goal of connecting participant families with the educational and other resources they need in a timely manner. Maintain confidentiality of information regarding all program participants.
Professional Improvement - 5% In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes and Association priorities. Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.
