Dept Marketing Statement Comprising diverse researchers from a variety of disciplines across academic divisions, the UC Santa Cruz Genomics Institute leads UC Santa Cruz's efforts to unlock the world's genomic data and accelerate breakthroughs in health and evolutionary biology. The Genomics Institute supports the scientific efforts of principal investigators, which involves approximately 110 personnel (which includes approximately 60 career staff, 10 academic non-faculty members, 30 graduate student researchers, and a handful post doctoral scholars and student employees), participating in projects supported by funds from the federal and state governments, private gifts, and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). Additionally, the GI provides funding support for approximate 80 additional personnel for GI related projects. Our platforms, technologies, and scientists unite global communities to create and deploy data-driven, life-saving treatments and innovative environmental and conservation efforts, while addressing the most fundamental societal and policy questions.
Applies professional student services concepts and cultural competencies knowledge to actively promote and help create a diverse, inclusive, and vibrant culture at the Genomics Institute. Provides support to the director of the Genomics Institute (GI) Office of Diversity (GIOD) with student outreach and engagement. Works independently and as part of a team to plan and implement inclusive educational programs and events. Creates effective and compelling communication and marketing materials to reach a diverse audience of students in collaboration with Genomics Institute communications manager. Recruits and promotes success of students who have faced barriers in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) and educational environments.

JOB DUTIES 40% - Outreach, Engagement, and Communication
Recruits and onboards undergraduate scholarship recipients. Implements outreach programs with specifically targeted students from under-represented and under-served communities who have historically faced barriers in education, STEM, or Social Sciences. Initiates and arranges student recruitment events to attract students from other institutions to UCSC. In coordination with GI communications manager and GIOD director, produces social media marketing materials, news announcements, and other program communication materials. Administer scholar program by managing contracts, participant IDs, payment forms, registration & travel for conferences. Help with growing high school student outreach program.
30% - Event Planning and Execution:
Coordinates, plans, and implements student events, such as professional development workshops, fundraisers, and recruitment events. Registers scholars for conferences and coordinates participation. Coordinate scheduling, reimbursement forms, travel arrangements, outreach, interface with speaker for bios/photos, reserve rooms food, and media. Identify workshops and other programming idea, interfacing with scholars to see their needs.
30% - Diversity Program and Administrative Support:
Helps director manage the day-to-day administrative aspects of the GIOD. Assists with the planning of a student summer research program. Assists with accurate reporting to funding agencies. Help with proposal tasks and post award program coordination and reporting for new programs. Provides support to the director and PI with conceptualizing and drafting components of grant proposals for funds that specifically relate to student outreach and retention.
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
Excellent organizational, time management skills with the ability to multitask.
Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
