This is a limited term appointment (1 Year) under the direction of the director of media relations (and some reporting to the director of government and community relations), the incumbent is charged with communicating news of the university's achievements and activities to internal campus community audiences such as student leadership and student organizations. As an employee of University Relations, the incumbent maintains strong working relationships with university administrators, faculty, and staff to help act as a liaison for University Relations and campus partners, such as students. Incumbent will help inform and provide feedback to the campus administrators about issues of importance, concern, or collaboration with the general student body. The incumbent's work is expected to enhance local, regional, state, and national understanding of the teaching, research, and public service missions of the University of California, Santa Cruz.
Independently oversees a comprehensive communications program for a unit or school with moderately complex communications requirements. The communications program usually includes written, visual, digital and electronic communications. Works with management to develop and execute organizational communication and market branding strategy. Consults on the design and implements information campaigns.

Job Duties 70% - Build Stakeholder Relationships to Ensure Communications are Relevant and Circulated Among the Target Population:
Connect and comminicate directly with key campus student stakeholders, including student leadership, student organizations/clubs, and student-serving departments on campus to accomplish the following:
Provide campus updates, materials, and explore opportunities for partnerships by setttng up regular meetings with students and student organizations.
Monitor activities across campus and conduct routine interviews to gather information, working closely with University Relations on the development and dissemenation of information materials targeted to a student audience.
Establish and maintain cooperative and productive contacts with campus staff, department chairs, faculty members, and other appropriate administrators and support staff.
Researches, develops, and maintains media distributions lists and identifies appropriate distribution audiences.
Work closely with colleagues in University Relations to develop materials that are both informative and relevant to a student population.
25% - Miscellaneous Writing Assignments:
Under the direction of the Director of Media Relations and the Director of Government and Community Relations, the incumbent accomplishes miscellaneous writing, editorial, and office assignments. Such assingments may include collaborating with students on opinion pieces for news outlets, helping answer student questions, working with Communications and Marketing to develop materials targeted to a student audience, and helping develop materials appropriate for social media.
5% - Other Duties as Assigned:
Provide perspective, feedback, and information to the University's leadership. Collaborate where appropriate with Student Success to align strategic communications and outreach to student audiences.
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
General knowledge of the usage and applications of electronic communication tools and skill in using same, including content management systems and social media.
Good written, verbal, interpersonal communication skills and political acumen.
Demonstrated knowledge of effective communication strategies, and an ability to communicate to a broad range of audiences.
Demonstrated ability to independently establish priorities and meet deadlines while working in a high-production office with competing demands and frequent interruptions.
Good organizational skills, including the ability to maintain accurate records and files of work.
Skill to maintain confidentiality.
Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with and establish effective working relationships with individuals at all levels of the University to successfully conduct assigned tasks and work.
Ability to communicate the University's achievements and priorities to student populations.
Demonstrated ability to work as part of a government relations team as well as a marketing and communications team, with particular emphasis on collaborating with colleagues in each of these units.
Demonstrated ability to assess the services offered by the marketing and communications office, and identify areas where services can be expanded.
