The Assistant Athletic Director for Strategic Communications is responsible for the development, coordination and implementation of athletics media relations, brand awareness, recruitment efforts and marketing plans for the university’s athletics programs. These duties include but are not limited to social media & web content, video stories, press releases, press conferences, statistics, and overall communication efforts for the university’s 17 current intercollegiate sports. In addition to supporting the staff and student-athletes within the athletics department, the Assistant Athletic Director for Strategic Communications works closely with members of the University Communications and Marketing department to promote the mission, news, and accomplishments of UW-River Falls’ athletics programs. This position will serve as a key administrator in the Athletic Department and is partially funded through the NCAA Division III Strategic Alliance Matching Grant Program.
Athletics Communication Oversight 75% • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the athletics communications office. • Recruit, train and supervise professional and student staff including one part-time assistant director, student interns and work-study students. • Develop and oversee athletics communication budget including purchasing and student worker salaries. • Develop and implement Athletics Department strategic digital communications plan, including annual review. • Oversee maintenance of Athletics Department social media accounts and develop social media strategies to increase engagement across a variety of platforms. • Oversee maintenance of Athletics Department website including game results and stories, statistics, student-athlete profiles, rosters, schedules, photo galleries and video content. • Oversee all aspects of pre-game, in-game and post-game communications, including game previews, press releases, game stories and statistical coverage. • Oversee production of athletics publications, such as game programs and brochures. • Coordinate with media and technology staff to implement an engaging live video broadcast production. • Serve as the primary point of contact for communication and reporting requirements with the WIAC, NCAA, CoSIDA and intercollegiate opponents.
Athletics Department Administration 15% • Serve as a member of the Athletics Department senior leadership team and participate in regular leadership meetings. • Provide oversight of strategic goals and priorities within the Athletics Department Strategic Plan. • Serve as a liaison for on-campus committees, including UWRF key communicators, UWRF Athletics Hall of Fame, Athletics Department marketing working group and Athletics Department fundraising working group. • Serve as a liaison with external agencies, including NCAA, CoSIDA and WIAC Sports Information Directors.
Marketing and Development 10% • Coordinate the development and implementation of an Athletics Department marketing plan, including annual review. • Direct the development and oversight of Athletics Department marketing internship program. • Assist with promotion and implementation of the Athletics Department fundraising initiatives, including the corporate partner program and annual Trivia Night event.
Required • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in journalism, communications, sports management or a related field. • Minimum four years of post-college experience in an athletics communication or sports information position involving media relations, basic layout and design, printed materials development and production, athletics event reporting, project management and statistical information development. • Excellent writing, editing, organizational, interpersonal and communication skills. • Familiarity with InDesign, Adobe Creative Suite, image-editing and web-editing software. • Experience with SideArm or Presto web platforms, NCAA LiveStats, Stat Crew, Automated Scorebook and other statistical software.
Preferred • Master’s degree • Relevant experience at an institution of higher education.
