Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Senior Public Relations Specialist Sciences for Rutgers Communications. The Senior Public Relations Specialist Sciences uses communications skills to find, write, pitch and track content that enhances the reputation of Rutgers University and its dynamic research programs across all disciplines, especially the sciences. The position leverages a range of evolving platforms, including the news media, social media, the University's news site and marketing initiatives to raise the profile and prominence of Rutgers as a research powerhouse that is consistently counted among the top-performing research universities in the nation.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Responsibilities include writing and pitching news releases, expert advisories, news stories and other content.
Provides media counsel and training, crisis communications, strategy development, daily operations, and serves as a university spokesperson and media liaison at events.
Exercises good judgment in interactions with people on and off campus and when handling complex and sensitive issues in high-pressure situations.
Provides directions, coordination, and support for communications and public relations efforts across campus as part of an integrated communications strategy.
Uses content management systems and familiar with social media, photography and videography.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
A minimum of five (5) years of experience in journalism, media relations, communications or a related field.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Self-starter, strategic thinker, problem-solver and value collaboration.
Ability to quickly assess issues and crises and to develop and execute effective plans to address them.
Ability to handle multiple competing priorities and work confidently, diplomatically and decisively under stress.
Experience in developing and executing communications plans.
Experience directly engaging journalists.
Excellent interpersonal, communication, organizational and reputation-building skills.
Ability to work as part of a team as well as independently.
Proficiency with standard Office software.
Ability to translate scientific research into stories, pitches, and other media that are approachable for general audiences.
Passion for scientific research and how it progresses the human condition.
Excellent relationship-building and pitching skills to secure news media coverage and public interest in that content.
