Web Communications Specialist - University Relations, Health Sciences 16815
The department of University Relations, Health Sciences, is seeking applications for a Web Communications Specialist. The Communication Specialist position provides a wide range of content creation, writing, editing and analytical assistance to University Relations-Health Sciences, focusing on website content. The position will be responsible for coordinating the creation, tagging, testing, publishing and analyzing of website content for all web assets that fall under health.wvu.edu. This position will also provide support in writing/editing announcements for internal and external communication, feature stories, press releases, faculty and student profiles and fact sheets using both print and digital storytelling. This position is responsible for overseeing content for the Health Sciences Employee Hub (Intranet) and contributing content, including text and graphic elements, for the WVU Infostation system. This position works closely with the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Public Health, Pharmacy and Nursing and various units, programs and departments within WVU Health Sciences to showcase the valuable programming, research and resources available.
In order to be successful in this position, the ideal candidate will:
Create, develop, edit and manage content for all Health Sciences websites that fall under health.wvu.edu.
Work closely with University Relations-Health Sciences and Health Sciences web team to develop web content strategy aligned with marketing and communication goals.
Assist Health Sciences school, unit, program and department web contributors with maintaining website content using a Content Management System (CMS).
Maintains regular and frequent contact with sources in Health Sciences schools, departments, centers, hospital and clinics to solicit relevant information to highlight and promote achievements through web features, digital content and other communication vehicles.
Utilize industry standard data analytics to drive the content creation process.
Serve as a resource with respect to writing, style and content structure. Write, edit, proofread, review and provide CMS support as required.
Perform tasks associated with content gathering and optimizing to make all forms of content web ready and accessible to users of all abilities, according to University standards and federal guidelines.
Verify that all content is approved through proper channels and systems prior to posting.
Conduct content audits to ensure content is structured and tagged properly for any relevant backend systems including the Content Management System (CMS), Infostation system, etc.
Develop text and graphic content for electronic billboards/Infostations at multiple locations.
Work with the web development teams at Health Sciences and at University Relations Digital Media to maintain the Health Sciences Web Style Guide.
Document and troubleshoot issues, make recommendations on how to resolve and work with the CMS support team.
Work closely with web developers and designers to create photo galleries and videos embedded in web pages.
Educate and engage stakeholders, project managers and other internal colleagues for widespread understanding of how content strategy supports recruitment and communication objectives.
Research and identify trends in digital communication and apply that knowledge to innovate and evolve Health Sciences digital and web assets.
Work closely with Health Sciences and WVU colleagues and others to ensure all content elements are properly branded using the WVU brand/style/trademark guidelines.
Demonstrate the capacity to understand the significance of assigned areas and places information before faculty, staff and the public in an accessible and compelling form. Coordinates with other communicators from across the University and WVU Medicine to achieve this goal.
Maintains positive relations with public, state and federal officials, as well as WVU constituency groups and stakeholders. Provide excellent customer service support to Health Sciences units, programs, faculty, staff and students.
Organizes and coordinates the work of other staff and students as assigned.
Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, public relations, English or related field required.
Three (3) years of experience in:
Interviewing, writing and editing or media relations for a news, communication, marketing, advertising, or public relations program; or for a healthcare organization, college, news media organization, government agency, business, or other large knowledge-based organization.
Writing for web and digital media.
Knowledge of news and media relations; use of various digital media and web platforms as well as basic knowledge of data analytics; strong news and feature writing skills using AP Style.
Demonstrated excellence in writing news, feature articles and/or public relations material and in interviewing, writing, editing and public speaking skills, including ability to distill and clarify ideas under deadline pressure.
Ability to operate the necessary computer, software, web-based and other high-tech, emerging equipment and perform various communications duties using a broad range of web and publishing programs (content management systems, media monitoring/distribution systems, archival programs.)
Demonstrated ability to use digital technology, including photography, video/video editing.
Ability to work collaboratively as part of a larger team, both as a project leader or team member, depending on the
