Job Summary/Basic Function: Job Summary: The public affairs manager will oversee all media relations, write news releases, assist with crisis communications and other community oversight involving Lamar University as needed. The position plays a critical role within the university's Marketing Communications team, reporting to the director of marketing.
Cultivate and maintain relationships with media on a local, state and national level
Support marketing initiatives across campus and our community
Work with faculty, staff, students and alumni to build newsworthy content
Arrange interviews, appearances, press conferences and check presentations among other events
Ensure brand consistency in all efforts
Organize and coordinate all campus announcements
Write news releases and other writing as needed, especially for Cadence magazine and University Advancement
Track media coverage through Critical Mention and other dashboards
Report and quantify all external news involving the university
Assist with strategizing crisis communication instances
Serve as spokesperson for the university
Minimum Qualifications: Qualifications: Must be a team player in working with a group of creative individuals Self-starter and ability to work with or without specific direction Outstanding verbal and written communication skills Ability to organize, plan and delegate tasks Have a full understanding of media needs as well as evident relationships with media contacts Be proactive, reliable, responsible and accurate with an attention to detail Possess the ability to keep information confidential Tactical understanding of all primary social media platforms Ability to work in high-stress environments Demonstrate excellent oral communication and presentation skills Be able and willing to work outside of normal business hours Have a proven track record in public relations, public affairs or similar role 5+ years of experience of direct involvement working with news media Ability to foster long-term relationships with key professionals 5+ years of writing for various mediums, including but not limited to web, news releases and articles Bachelors degree in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism or relevant field
Preferred Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications: Masters degree in communications or related field Leadership experience of 3-5 years
