Description
The Office of Media Relations, which is part of University Communications and Marketing within the University Relations Division, works to promote and protect the reputation of Tufts University and communicate the excellence of its faculty and students, the quality of its academic programs and research, and the contributions it makes to society. Through strategic contact with local, national, and international media, the media relations team communicates Tufts' distinctive strengths and as needed, serves as spokespersons on key issues.
The Media Relations Coordinator will track, interpret and report the team's results by using its media monitoring platform and other databases. The Media Relations Coordinator will build upon the team's current reporting capabilities, which include daily, quarterly and annual reports, and add to them by recommending new approaches that help the team set priorities, make decisions and communicate its impact within and beyond the organization. The Media Relations Coordinator has primary responsibility for ensuring that Tufts in the News, a daily digest of university news coverage read by senior leadership, is prepared, meeting high standards for editorial quality and timeliness. Additional responsibilities include processing invoices and monitoring budgets, scheduling meetings, helping to plan events, screening media calls and visitors, and building media contact lists. The Media Relations Coordinator also will participate in story idea generation efforts and will have occasional opportunities to draft press releases, distribute them to the media, and pitch the media on stories.
Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
- Knowledge and experience typically acquired through a completion of high school diploma/GED and 5+ years of administrative experience OR a Bachelor's degree and 3+ years of experience.
- Requires advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office suite including word editing and graphics functions, spreadsheet and database knowledge.
- In addition, basic accounting knowledge and excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Familiarity with social media (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook)
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and commitment to accuracy and timeliness.
- Ability to work independently and to oversee the contributions of part-time staff
- Comfort with numbers and data
- Interest and knowledge of news, current events and media
- Occasional evening and weekend work
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with Cision
- 1 year of related experience (part-time work or internships may be applicable)
- Previous experience in higher education and communications (part-time work or internships may be applicable)
Special Work Schedule Requirements:
Some nights and weekend work
