Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking an Assistant Director of Communications Strategy for Rutgers Communications and Marketing (R-Comm). Reporting to the Director of Public and Media Relations, this position will use expert communication strategies to elevate the reputation and perception of Rutgers-New Brunswick and Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences by positioning the institutions as key visionaries in progressing the human condition. By monitoring trends in trends in culture, higher education, and emerging issues, this position will seek opportunities for campus leadership, deans, and constituents to be forefront in news and media as visionaries and position Rutgers at the vanguard of higher education and a university which innovates for the public good.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Plans long term successful communication plans and also reactive communications for emerging topics.
Oversees the development and execution of communication campaigns that involve several units within R-Comm, including (but not limited to) media relations, marketing, digital and web communications.
Works within the team to find, write, and pitch brand aligned stories, op eds, and leadership commentary to external media.
Works with leadership in an academic enterprise to elevate the perception and reputation of RU NB and RBHS through tactful leadership media placement.
Strategizes and conceptualizes planning and for all leaders across interdisciplinary units to provide maximum engagement and exposure.
Stays up to date on trends in higher education, current issues, and current trends to pitch opportunities for leadership to have a leading edge and remain forefront for the university.
Builds and maintain media contacts for elevated opportunities.
Continuously reviews plans, collects feedback, and updates as needed.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree, preferably in communications, or a related field.
A minimum of five (5) years experience in communications or public relations.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Proven experience in media placements of visionaries or leaders in an organization and placing them forefront in current issues and trends.
Experience in institutional media pitching with experience with building and maintaining media contacts.
Ability to take on current culture and higher education trends and issues.
Experience with emerging, digital, and traditional media outlets.
Strategic thinker, proven problem solver, and work well under pressure.
Ability to work well in a team and to build relationships with campus partners and subject matter experts.
Proven project management experience and ability to develop and execute communications plans.
Strong interpersonal skills.
Ability to build and maintain media contacts, experience with emerging, digital, and traditional media, and proven success of media placement and pitching of leadership in an organization.
Understanding of news media outlets, social media, and news & social media monitoring tools.
Experience at a higher education institution.
Knowledge of trade publications in higher educations.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
The position is expected to be on call during times of emergencies and crisis.
