Executive Director Job Description
The Executive Director manages and supports La Crosse's regional, full-symphonic orchestra which provides concerts and activities throughout the year. A requisite skill is the ability to leverage the substantial talents of staff, board members, interns, and volunteers. The Executive Director plans, supervises, coordinates, and joins in carrying out various functions of the organization including finance, fundraising, marketing, organizational development, community relations, and events management. The position does not direct any aspect of music activity which is the sole responsibility of the Music Director. The position reports to the Board of Directors through its President or designee.
Oversees annual operational budget covering all revenues and expenditures.
Manages concert ticket sales, including season tickets.
Obtains concert and other sponsorships, program advertisements, and in-kind contributions. Solicits major gifts.
Executes contracts for concert venues and support services. Recruits, organizes, and assigns interns and volunteers.
Develops and manages special events and programs such as the Valentine Ball and the Dining Out coupon book.
With Board involvement and approval, creates, modifies and implements a multi-year development plan.
Utilizing professional financial advisors¸ and with Executive Committee oversight, monitors and manages the endowment fund.
Manages the grant-writing process. Utilizes staff and committee members to enhance the effectiveness of grant applications.
Works to communicate with all patron segments. Develop ways to attract new patrons.
Coordinates the uses of social media to promote the LSO. Oversees an effective and up-to-date website.
Creates working relationships with local print, radio and television media. Provides news releases and places ads and stories.
Produces concert print programs and solicits ad placements. Utilizes the concert program to educate patrons and to encourage contributions.
Guides the Board in the continued development of a multi-year strategic plan to carry out the LSO’s mission.
Establishes networks and contacts with the local fine arts community, looking for mutually advantageous collaborations.
Seeks “cutting edge” best practices from other organizations for planning and implementing LSO events, concerts and communications.
Supervises the Finance Manager, a full-time professional, as well as any other LSO office personnel, part-time employee¸ intern or volunteer.
Supports the Music Director by overseeing the details of orchestra personnel functions such as pay, mileage, concert staffing¸ and music distribution.
The Executive Director will serve at the pleasure of the Board of Directors, reporting to the President of the Board (or designee.) It is expected that there will be an on-going communication on performance. At a minimum, there will be an annual written review. The President may assign other duties not specifically outlined in the job description.
