The Social Media Specialist will plan, create and execute social media activity on the School of Nursing's primary accounts, evaluate new platforms for their suitability, and consider new and innovative ways to advance VUSN's news, accomplishments, and visibility with key audiences. They will monitor, measure and report on social media performance, engagement and effectiveness based on data.

The School of Nursing Communications unit includes a highly skilled creative development team that provides graphic support, photography, digital asset management, advertising design, video and special project development. It also includes a web developer and a communications content specialist (currently recruiting). The department works with professionals from various other work groups to maximize its communications abilities. These include the VUSN alumni relations office, which produces an alumni newsletter, currently creates most Twitter tweets and Instagram posts, and creates content in relation to alumni events. The Dean's office includes a program manager who directs and manages events as well as major activities such as Commencement and Pinnings.
Duties and Responsibilities
Plan, write, produce and post social media content for Vanderbilt University School of Nursing's primary accounts, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube and other social media platforms, including creating digital media assets, researching content, and more
Grow and expand the school's social media presence into new social media platforms, and increase its presence on existing platforms including Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Instagram.
Maintain an editorial calendar to plan content dissemination. Coordinate with Vanderbilt's Division of Communications Social Media Team on non-nursing/school content.
Research emerging social media platforms and trends while providing oversight and recommendations for best practices
Monitor social media activity and engagement. Provide timely responses to comments, direct messages, mentions and relevant keywords on social media platforms
Under the guidance of the Director of Communications, implement social media campaigns and strategies, including budget planning, content ideation, ad creation, editorial calendars, schedules and analysis
Be able to demonstrate and communicate about the role social media plays in the larger communications plan for the school.
Monitor, measure and report on social media content performance and engagement; analyze, review and report on effectiveness of campaigns; closely monitor potential issues; make channel- and content-strategy implementation recommendations based on data.
Create reports for senior leadership and make recommendations on how to enhance efforts.
Create and direct social media-centered contests and giveaways that aim to improve our engagement with our core audiences as appropriate.
Check spelling, grammar, punctuation, syntax, and word usage; fact check and proofread for errors in copy, art and design.
Coordinate social media plans with other VUSN areas, including Alumni and Student Affairs; when appropriate, coordinate with VU and VUMC social media teams.
Represent the School of Nursing in VU's social media community.
Develop and maintain professional relationships throughout the school and university.
Demonstrate understanding of the school's brand, mission, values, goals and priorities, and possess an ability to ensure that all are considered in developing social media content.
This position does not have supervisory responsibility; it reports administratively and functionally to the Director of Communications.
Education and Certifications :
A bachelor's degree and at least 2-4 years of experience in advertising, communications, social media management, marketing, media, public relations or related field is required.
Experience and Skills :
Strong written and verbal communications skills are necessary; creativity a must.
Comprehensive understanding of how communications can be used in an organization's communications strategies is essential.
Experience in creating content across digital platforms, including websites and email marketing strongly preferred.
Must demonstrate excellence in the following areas: news judgment, written communications skills, social media marketing and advertising best practices, and a sense of what is appropriate for the brand.
Experience measuring and monitoring digital marketing and how these analytics can be applied to marketing and communications strategies is desired.
Creative thinking and flexibility with a willingness to consider many options, problem solve and take directives is necessary.
The ideal candidate will have a finger on the pulse of social media trends, platforms, advertising and outcomes.
Excellent interpersonal skills are required.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office (including Word, Excel, Publisher, Outlook), Google Analytics is required
Experience with basic web content management systems or tools such as Hootsuite, Sprout Social, Buffer, or others, and Adobe Creative Suite is required; HTML and web skills a plus.
Willing to work independently as well as collaboratively, is necessary.
Willing to take direction
Comfortable and have the skill set to go in person to investigate, interview, and draw out the details of stories ideas from faculty, students and upper administration
Work outside regular business hours as needed in order to perform job responsibilities, including being officially on-call
Perform other relevant duties as assigned
