The Communications Coordinator is a two-year term professional position that is part of the Strategic Communications team within Communications and Marketing at Vanderbilt University. The position is a key individual contributor responsible for coordinating communications activities in support of the university's mission and leading priorities with focus on the Vanderbilt Project on Unity & American Democracy , ("the project") a new and high-visibility institutional initiative that aims to advance research and evidence-based reasoning into the national discourse. This role will also coordinate with specialists in editorial, social media, visual media, graphic design, web content, email marketing and others to help package and amplify content to key audiences. The Communications Coordinator role is responsible for project coordination, content development and distribution across a variety of channels - including web, email, video and social media - to maximize engagement with key audiences. The ideal candidate has digital communications experience within higher ed, corporate communications, political campaigns or government. Reporting directly to the Associate Director of Communications Strategy for the project, the Communications Coordinator works closely within the Vanderbilt Project on Unity & American Democracy programming and communications teams and across Communications and Marketing and others across campus to achieve these goals.
The Communications and Marketing team is a dynamic and collaborative group that develops and executes strategies that inform, engage and inspire others to participate in Vanderbilt University's global academic and research mission.
Duties and Responsibilities
Maintain the project's web, email and social media channels, to include posting online content and executing digital distribution strategies to support position goals.
Support the project's communications team in executing the communications strategy for the project.
Seek out compelling narratives to support the university's strategic communications goals for all university channels and publications with emphasis on promoting the project.
Work with project leads and project agency of record to manage editorial calendars for assigned coverage areas.
Coordinate execution of all communications tactics to ensure that efforts are coordinated and messaging is consistent across channels.
Produce content as needed to support the goals of the project, to include web content, email newsletters, event promotions, talking points, speeches, leadership messaging and other projects as assigned. Demonstrate fluency with AP style and university style guidelines in this work.
Coordinate closely with Marketing to identify appropriate design approach and web design assets to support projects as assigned.
Assist visual media partners (videography and photography) with story development and production, and guide messaging.
Be able to rigorously fact-check and copy edit your own work and that of others.
Provide support as needed and assigned for department priorities.
Demonstrate understanding of the university's mission, values, goals and priorities and an ability to ensure that all are considered in developing communications strategies.
Communicate and collaborate effectively with a wide range of audiences--including faculty, students, leadership, staff, alumni, suppliers and agencies.
Efficiently and effectively manage multiple, complex results-oriented projects with quick turn-around requirements.
Adhere to confidentiality and business ethics; demonstrate outstanding judgment and discretion.
Perform other relevant duties as assigned.
A bachelor's degree is necessary .
A degree in communications, journalism, history, political science or higher education is preferred .
1-2 years of experience in communications, public affairs, journalism or related field is necessary.
Experience with digital communications tools, such as email marketing and website content management systems, is preferred.
Experience working on a political campaign, news room, federal policy-driven initiative or foundation, Capitol Hill (U.S. Congress) or within a federal or state agency or within an institution of higher education is preferred .
