The Mellon College of Science (MCS) is home to four departments and many programs and research centers that cross teams. We approach scientific problems from fresh angles using creative interdisciplinary approaches while drawing on our departmental strengths in the core sciences. MCS faculty members are nationally and internationally recognized for their research in a variety of fields, including polymer science, cosmology, mathematical finance and neuroscience.
Carnegie Mellon University's Mellon College of Science is searching for a Communications Specialist. This is a dynamic opportunity for someone who thrives in an interesting and challenging work environment. You will contribute to the department by providing essential support by increasing the visibility of MCS by communications and disseminating the college's news to a broad audience.
Core responsibilities will include:
To create content for MCS and Carnegie Mellon University publications and websites.
Manage MCS's social media channels
Assist with media relations for the college
Work directly with faculty, staff, students and alumni to develop and write stories to promote MCS. Topics will include, but are not limited to: college events, alumni and student news and profiles, internal announcements, research summaries, press releases and magazine articles.
Pitch and promote stories about the college to local, national, international and trade media.
Create social media campaigns aimed at increasing the visibility of the college.
Develop and implement new, creative ideas for promoting MCS.
Other duties as assigned.
You must demonstrate:
Demonstrated ability to write stories on varying topics in an engaging, concise and accurate manner. A writing test will be required.
Proven experience writing for a variety of platforms, including the web, magazines and press releases.
Excellent proofreading skills. A proofreading test will be required.
Ability to show good and appropriate judgement in deciding on story ideas and how those stories should be framed and featured.
Demonstrated experience with social media, including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
Familiarity with basic photography, videography and graphic design.
Experience with science writing/communications preferred, but not required.

Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism or any related field required. Candidates with a degree in the sciences and relevant communications experience will also be considered.
3-5 years of experience with writing and editing in a public relations setting or the equivalent required; prior experience communicating for an academic or scientific institution preferred.
Ability to work afterhours and on weekends when needed.
Ability to work independently and in a team.
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
Familiarity with Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite.
