The Communications Office plays an integral role at RCS by sharing the school’s mission, programs, activities, strategic plan, vision and the unique components that comprise the Riverdale Experience. There is an opportunity for an Assistant Director to join the team and help to carry out Communications’ commitments.
Position Description and Essential Responsibilities
The Assistant Director of Communications reports to the Director of Strategic Communications and is a new position in the Communication Office. As the team’s principal content strategist, they would help to establish the direction of all Communications Office deliverables. They would manage the content stream of web content, news stories, email newsletters, social media, photos and videos. They would ensure an exceptional experience for all users of the “riverdale.edu” website and various web platforms in use at the School. They would be responsible for working as an in-house web designer and web content specialist, as well as serve as the main liaison between Riverdale and our outside web development team. Additionally, this position would be responsible for numerous Riverdale institutional social media accounts.
A part of this position would include the collection, research, investigation and evaluation of user requirements.
They would also help to steward and enact the recently introduced Riverdale Country School brand across the site. They would have the opportunity to help create style guides, image libraries and protocols for using the brand.
The Assistant Director of Communications would be an active contributor to and organizer of our School’s photo database and photo sharing platform.
In this position, the Assistant Director of Communications will:
Work strategically and directly with internal partners to create annual communications and marketing plans for events, programs and activities that meet their needs and programmatic objectives
Create with the Director of Strategic Communications an overarching social media strategy and content calendar reflective of RCS goals, objectives and initiatives.
Conduct user research and testing of new and existing features, and assist with the ongoing evaluation of communication tools and activities to maximize effectiveness
Monitor SEO and user engagement and suggest content optimization
Supervise the riverdale.edu website and assist with other platforms used for communication (i.e., Veracross). This includes:
This includes Admissions, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB), Head of School, School Nurse and numerous other offices/teams.
Creating new web pages as needed and “sunset” outdated pages.
Collaborating with numerous departments and teams throughout the School to ensure their representation on the website.
Ensuring application of “best practices” concerning DEIB and website, i.e., the language of inclusion and belonging, accessibility, etc.
Planning and implementing new designs and widgets
Optimizing existing user interface designs
Testing for intuitivity and experience
Manage the RCS school-wide photo database
Manage RCS social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram, with the intent to grow the audiences and build awareness of RCS. This includes:
Set up and optimize school pages within each platform to increase the visibility of RCS social content
Manage and analyze site metrics, interact with users, and be responsible for creative design.
Explore opportunities for organic and paid social media content as appropriate for institutional objectives and programs.
Stay up to date with the latest social media best practices and technologies
Other duties as assigned
Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
Four (4) plus years’ experience in digital marketing, social media, web content management or web design and coordination.
Two (2) plus years’ experience with WordPress with ability to update and customize the RCS website in coordination with our web development team (outside provider).
Strong familiarity with the various social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, etc.), and an aptitude for exploring new platforms possibly appropriate for RCS.
Knowledge of project management and web design best practices
Experience with design tools such as Canva, Photoshop, InDesign
Understanding of social media metrics; able to interpret the results and take action to increase effectiveness of social media campaigns
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work with colleagues and partners from a variety of perspectives and backgrounds in a collaborative manner
Ability to work independently
Ability to manage numerous complex projects and competing deadlines
A passion for exploring new ideas and applications within the education sector
Preferred Skills and Experience:
Previous employment experience in an education environment (school-based or higher education).

As the world faces the immense challen...ge of the COVID-19 pandemic, Riverdale Country School continues to prioritize the health, safety, and well-being of its community members.
