The Communications and Outreach Specialist in the Brown University School of Public Health will be part of a fast moving and vibrant team that is charged with creating a clearinghouse for Long Covid research and evidence synthesis, amplifying Brown Universityâ™s position as a leader in Long Covid research.
Long Covid, a condition that includes dozens of symptoms and can last for months after an initial Covid infection, affects millions of people around the world but it is poorly understood and often overlooked. To meet this emerging challenge, School of Public Health (SPH) is investing in a key new initiative which brings together researchers, clinicians, and communications and policy experts, to rapidly study and convey the significant impact of Long Covid on people, health systems, and economies, and to inform policy making.Â The Communications and Outreach Specialist will contribute to, SPHâ™s Long Covid initiative strategic plans.

Under the guidance of the Program Manager, the Communications and Outreach Specialistâ™s primary responsibility will be to support the research team for the Long Covid initiative, specifically in the areas of research knowledge translation, written and visual content development and rapid information dissemination.
Major Responsibility: Â Under the direction of the Program Manager, continuously enhance the branding and visibility of the Long Covid initiativeâ™s website and other media platforms through research knowledge translation, written and visual content development and rapid information dissemination. 70%
Help distill complex information into clear, easy to understand content to drive engagement
Lead media outreach efforts, in coordination with the School and the Universityâ™s news media operations, by determining most appropriate channels, formats and presentation styles for delivery
Suggest creative and engaging ideas for enhancing the impact of the Long Covid initiativeâ™s content and media platforms
Meet frequent tight deadlines
Advise the research team and SPH senior leadership on best practices for efficient and effective communicationsÂ
Manage the Long Covid initiative email account, tracking and responding to incoming public inquiries and media requests based on management input
Develop content in alignment with Brownâ™s policies and protocols relating to visual identity, image use, web hosting, accessibility, copyright and vendor hiring.Â
Align communications with established SPH and Brown University identity and messaging priorities.
Coordinate with internal campus constituents, including the Office of University Communications and the Communications Manager in the Office of Vice President for Research, as needed for projects requiring collaboration and input from other University stakeholders.Â
Major Responsibility: Manage and maintain the digital library, website and other media platforms. 20%
Develop an organized shared digital document library for all Long Covid initiative correspondence, records, evaluations, and reports
Maintain and troubleshoot Long Covid website and other media platforms
Serve as the point of contact for website updates and requests, making sure it meets the evolving needs of all stakeholders so it is an effective and timely communication tool at the local, national and international level
Major Responsibility: Provide reporting and event planning support. 10%
Assist with the drafting and design of regular presentations and reporting materials as required by the researchers, funder, Brown University, and other constituencies
Participate as a member of the event planning team to support high-level meetings or events with the funder, advisory committees, government officials, industry professionals, the general public and other relevant constituents
Help develop, prepare and distribute all event communications
Assist with preparation of audiovisual assets, tools and resources, event materials including minutes/action items, space planning, catering and facilities orders as applicable, follow up communications, etc.

Education, Experience, and Competencies
Bachelorâ™s degree in communications, public relations, journalism or related field; advanced degree or training preferred
3-5 years of professional experience in communications or a related field
Experience with research translation and audience engagement strongly preferredÂ
Demonstrated ability to quickly produce and edit copy for a variety of platforms
Demonstrated ability to meet tight deadlines with quality work
Demonstrated ability to develop strong relationships and coordinate among various partners and constituencies, both internal and external, to establish and further collaborative initiatives Â
Excellent written and verbal communication, time management, organizational and interpersonal skills is essential
Experience developing and implementing integrated communications strategies that span multiple outlets including print, web, and social media
Strong proficiency working with web content management systems and the full range of social media platforms and account management tools.
Knowledge of copyright, image use protocols and laws governing online posting of intellectual property
Demonstrated ability and flexibility to multi-task, prioritize, and manage diverse job responsibilities while meeting various deadlines required
Must be a team player with the ability to work independently with a strong service-oriented attitude
Demonstrated ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment. Â
Knowledge and/or interest in public health, Covid-19, and/or epidemiology is a plus
