Texas Monthly has an immediate opening for a senior engagement editor. This new position will oversee the distribution of Texas Monthly’s editorial content through social media sites, newsletters, and third-party publishers, with the goal of meeting readers and potential readers where they are, and introducing Texas Monthly’s stories to them. The senior engagement editor will report to the deputy editor for digital journalism and will supervise the newsletter editor and the social media editor, reviewing strategies for each platform and helping to craft strategy for long-term editorial projects. This position will also be responsible for partnerships and initiatives with third-party publishing platforms, such as Apple News and Pocket.
This is a full-time position with generous benefits, including a comprehensive health-insurance plan, 401(k) matching, profit sharing, and the opportunity for annual bonuses. Compensation is competitive and negotiable. This position would be based in Austin.
Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Crafting strategic approaches to how Texas Monthly’s editorial content is deployed across off-platform sites
Supervising the social media editor and the newsletter editor
Coordinating with Apple News on its publication of the monthly print magazine and on any requests or questions its editors might have about TM’s stories
Determining which stories would be a good fit for Apple News push notifications
Managing initiatives with other third-party publishing platforms such as Pocket and Flipboard
Helping to develop a strategy for posting and cross-promoting what TM expects to be a significant increase in video storytelling
Maintaining cross-training on social media platforms to assist as needed
Coordinating with the audience department on assessing analytics and data around audience engagement initiatives
Oversee the comments community on our website

Successful candidates will possess the following skills and abilities:
A strong sense for stories, angles, and modes of presentation that can capture an online audience and distinguish TM’s coverage from that of all competitors
Effective communication with direct reports and peers in the editorial and audience departments
Strategic thinking and critical assessments about the platforms and initiatives that best serve Texas Monthly’s audience goals
Creativity and a willingness to try new approaches
Familiarity with tools such as Google Analytics, Parsley, CrowdTangle, and Disqus
At least three years of digital journalism experience preferred
Experience working on social media strategy required
Existing knowledge of Texas and its cultural and political landscape is a plus
