DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
Originally founded in 1997, the Baskin School of Engineering is the first professional school at UC Santa Cruz. Over the past 20 years, Baskin Engineering has become a unique 21st century school of engineering and technology, characterized by evolutionary growth fueled by ongoing research opportunities that open new areas of intellectual inquiry. Baskin Engineering has grown to include six academic departments, a variety of research centers and institutes, and has ambitious plans for further programmatic growth. The focus of Baskin Engineering educational programming is to instill strong basic knowledge for sound practice in science and ethical engineering for the well-being of society. Its diverse curricula facilitates creative thinking and prepares students for productive and rewarding careers. Baskin Engineering is focused on building collaborative connections and expanding instruction and research activities for faculty and students at UC Santa Cruz, both at its Santa Cruz campus and at its campus in Silicon Valley, the international center of technological innovation.
This position reports to the Director of Community Engagement and works closely with school leadership, including the Dean, Associate Deans, Assistant Dean, Department Chairs and staff leaders. Meets regularly with the UCSC Director of Marketing Communications, as well as campus content creators from across campus to ensure that campus priorities such as student success and research excellence are communicated effectively. Manages a comprehensive communications program and/or projects for the Baskin School of Engineering with complex communication requirements; reviews and approves recommendations for functional programs and communications and provides guidance to subordinates to achieve goals in accordance with established policies.

JOB DUTIES

Manages complex comprehensive communications programs and projects, including written, visual, digital, and electronic communications, for a large, highly visible organization. Coordinates internally and externally to ensure communications align with Baskin Engineering and campus priorities. Sets goals and strategies to meet those goals.
Identifies specific communications needs to meet goals and develops the content and process for organizational improvements.

Effectively manages professional staff responsible for producing a variety of communication pieces across venues and mediums including written, visual, and electronic communications. Selects, trains, guides, directs, sets performance expectations, mentors, evaluates, and as required, takes corrective action with staff.
Provides guidance and direction to staff on university procedures, university and Baskin Engineering priorities and messaging, and day-to-day guidance as needed on communications projects spanning social media, print, web, video, and news media. Effectively coordinates efforts among communications staff, ensuring that content is optimized and leveraged across a variety of disciplines.
Works with staff to ensure production of high quality products that effectively deliver the desired message within budget and time constraints.

Advises and consults with Baskin Engineering senior administration (Dean, faculty Associate Deans, Assistant Dean, Department Chairs), senior peer group, division communicators, and campus marketing communications regarding all aspects of communications including developing strong communications strategies and long- and short-term communications plans and/or projects that effectively deliver the desired message and build the school's brand.
Advises campus communications senior staff and leadership on topics related to Baskin Engineering priorities and high-profile topics.
Maintains relationships with key constituents on and off-campus, including university Marketing Communications, local media outlets, and partner campuses in the University of California system.

Directs and coordinates branding efforts for the Baskin School of Engineering, including managing the school's relationship with third party entities.

With Information Technology Services (ITS) partners, oversees the marketing and communications aspects of all Baskin Engineering web projects, including content strategy. Represents the division's interests in a school-wide web redesign taking place as part in the context of a broader campus web redesign effort.

Supports the Director of Community Engagement in conceiving and executing an effective marketing and communications plan for the school's special celebrations and/or anniversaries.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Strong knowledge of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for various media venues, technical aspects and requirements of various venues, and the most appropriate and effective applications.
Broad knowledge and understanding of technical applications to effectively manage/supervise professional technical staff, including design concepts, various media and mediums, applications.
Strong knowledge of the division and university, its achievements, mission, vision, goals, policies, practices and infrastructure, and a strong knowledge of current affairs, issues in engineering higher education and current research trends.
Strong knowledge of financial and personnel management, including understanding of management techniques, guiding principles, relevant laws, policies and best practices.
Solid management skills to select, train, evaluate, lead, direct, guide and motivate subordinate staff to produce high quality work; skill to take corrective action as required.
Solid skills to create develop and implement comprehensive long and short-term strategic communications plans.
Solid knowledge and skills to advise and consult with management to ensure delivery of the desired message to the target and / or broad general audiences.
