Responsibilities:
Media Relations
- Develops, directs, and implements media outreach strategies for the Institute on Race, Power, and Political Economy. Develops bespoke communications strategies that address the specific communications needs and opportunities of different projects.
- Leverages profile-raising opportunities such as external events in the news cycle related to the work of the Institute, as well as internal events such as the release of new research to advance communications goals.
- Develops and sustains media relationships. Writes and sends emails to journalists, talks with journalists via phone, zoom, and/or in person as appropriate. Maintains a list of key media contacts whose platforms and interests are most appropriate to telling the Institute's story. Represents the Institute with external partners, including journalists, editors, agencies, and non-governmental organizations, to pursue media outreach.
- Writes and disseminates backgrounders, profiles, blog posts, talking points and other media content, e.g. tweets; creates media lists, facilitates interviews. Helps team members draft, edit, and pitch articles and op-eds.
Strategic Communications
- Takes a leading role in developing the Institute's key themes, messaging, narratives, and its strategic communications goals and plan.
- Crafts leadership visibility strategies for Institute on Race, Power, and Political Economy Institute fellows, senior staff and faculty that secure media and speaking opportunities on pressing and chronic social issues, politics and policy, and breaking research.
- Creates and disseminates press clips reports and media analytics.
Contributes to the Institute's communication team and other teams as assigned and assists or leads special projects and other duties as assigned by the Director of Administration and Communications. Contributes to other projects directed by colleagues. Attends functions, events, etc. which may occur after business hours or on weekends. Manages and liaises with on-site media and photographers.
Content Creation and Promotion
- Creates content that engages audiences including web content, videos, promotional materials, and development documents. Identifies stories to connect with key audiences, elevate the Institute's profile, and share its narratives, stories, people, and research findings.
- Manages content for the Institute on Race, Power, and Political Economy's website.
Management and Collaboration
- Serves as a primary point of contact for the New School's central Marketing and Communications team. Ensures Institute communications raise the New School's profile, amplify key themes and are consistent with the university's brand voice and messaging. Serves as primary point of contact for outside communications consultants, designers, and content creators, spurring and managing effective collaborations. Manages a student worker, including assigning research, writing, and web content projects.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience, plus 6 – 9 years communications experience. Must have experience in communications and media relations, including experience with social media. Knowledge of politics, policy, advocacy, economics, race, gender, and other social stratifications preferred.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including superior written and spoken communication.
- A passion for the Institute's mission is strongly preferred.
- Trustworthy and able to be entrusted with confidential information, such as pre-release research findings. Ability to work in a team environment including both in-person and remote colleagues in an atmosphere the emphasizes mutual respect, integrity, innovation, fun, flexibility, and effectiveness.
- Must be adept at working both independently and in collaboration and be able to think strategically.
- Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks simultaneously, and work well under pressure
- Knowledge of E-mail, Spreadsheet, Word Processing and Presentation software (Microsoft Office and G Suite preferred).
- Ability to learn The New School's systems including intranet and website.
- Strong follow-up skills with attention to detail and superior client service skills.
