Harvard Public Health, a magazine of ideas and insights for a healthier world, is seeking a creative, motivated, and versatile Senior Editor to join its team. Harvard Public Health is an independent editorial voice from The Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health published in print and online. We are seeking to expand our content for the Harvard Public Health magazine into engaging, authoritative commentary about public health and to start newsletters aimed at connecting with an ever-broadening global audience of public health officials, activists, policymakers, researchers, clinicians, and more.
We are looking for an experienced Senior Editor to lead both of these initiatives. Reporting to the magazine's Editor-In-Chief, the Senior Editor will also be responsible for managing freelance writers to produce a topical newsletter and may be called on to write as well. The ideal candidate will be well-organized, deadline-oriented, collaborative, and ambitious.
Typical duties for the Harvard Public Health magazine include, but are not limited to, the following:
Develop compelling ideas for opinion pieces in conjunction with the editor-in-chief; identify and recruit writers; build relationships with researchers, officials, policymakers, and others with new ideas about public health from across the breadth of the field
Edit and craft arguments across a wide range of complex scientific and institutional topics; manage the process from commission through publication, including editing and proofreading pieces and crafting outstanding headlines both for print and for SEO
Work with the Editor-In-Chief to devise and execute a newsletter strategy, including content options, frequency, and format; develop and manage a network of freelancers and work with staff writers to produce the content, ensuring that they deliver accurate, engaging content in a timely fashion; edit their work and work with the editorial team to consistently deliver in a timely fashion. The Senior Editor may also write some newsletters.
Collaborate with the Harvard Chan School Senior Social Media Manager to conceptualize new ways to share engaging content on the School's social channels and on specific channels to be developed for the magazine.
Post stories on the magazine's website and work with other members of the team on selecting images to accompany the stories.
Stay abreast of major issues in public health and ongoing developments.
Perform other duties as assigned.
PLEASE NOTE: All applicants are required to submit a resume and cover letter. Shortlisted applicants will be required to submit samples of writing or editing. Applications submitted without these materials will not be considered.
