The role of Director of Internal Communications (DIC) in the UCSF Office of Communications (OOC) is a new position that will require an individual with success developing, driving and executing a strategic, integrated communications program; leading partners across a complex and decentralized organization; proven ability to effectively communicate via employee and executive communications; and experience driving engagement through a variety of channels. This position requires a leader with a high degree of knowledge in the communications field and excellence in oral, written and editing skills. This individual must be able to function with a high degree of confidence, diplomacy and autonomy.
The goal of internal communications is to ensure members of the UCSF community have a clear understanding of UCSF's mission, vision, priorities and policies in partnership with leaders and partners.
The ideal candidate for this position is a dynamic, visionary, creative and experienced communications leader and seasoned collaborator in a complex and decentralized environment. This person must be very well organized and/or trained in project management.
The DIC's work will include developing communications strategies and plans, leading content strategy for internal communications, and managing human and fiscal resources in the OOC. The DIC should be experienced in problem-solving, analyzing unique and sensitive issues, and responding to and writing about fast-breaking news and issues, including serving as a Public Information Officer to execute emergency communications when the Emergency Operations Center is activated.
Co-leading Internal Communications
As the right-hand partner to the Executive Director, Internal Communications (EDIC), the DIC will help redefine how UCSF communicates internally, implementing best practices to build a new internal communications function and co-lead a newly created internal communications unit, which includes two digital editors.
The DIC will serve as the Executive Director's delegate to lead weekly meetings of the internal communications team and represent the internal communications unit in cross-functional projects and leadership meetings when needed.
The DIC will work with the EDIC to create and distribute internal newsletters through content selection, copywriting and formatting, using analysis and testing to iteratively maximize internal engagement. The DIC also will shape the information workflow, overseeing systems and shared resources to engage, empower and inform the internal communicators across the enterprise.
The DIC will lead and serve as the OOC's primary liaison to the 200+-member UCSF Communicators Network to manage an organized communications function that coordinates the creation, amplification and distribution of information that is both operational and inspirational. The DIC also will drive ongoing forums to advance professional development opportunities and build community within the network.
Co-developing Employee Experience Platform
In collaboration with the EDIC, the DIC will be responsible for defining the overall vision, goals and long-term success of UCSF's new enterprise employee platform through the proactive leadership of its Capability Team. This cross-functional project team will be responsible for driving the success of a new platform designed to encourage the engagement, work efficiency, and collaboration of staff, faculty, learners and affiliates across UCSF. The Capability Team will closely collaborate with the project's Experience Team to define and implement its vision. In driving this project, the EDIC will work closely with colleagues across the enterprise including the Chancellor's Office, IT Services and the Office of Research.
The DIC must be a strategic thinker skilled in content strategy best practices including but not limited to audience research, audience targeting, and data-driven analysis. The DIC must have knowledge of and experience working in content management systems and competency using common business applications and digital tools. The DIC must have knowledge of and experience working with digital and social media networking platforms, and competency using common business applications and digital tools - from Drupal web publishing to PowerPoint.
Contributing to OOC Portfolio
The DIC also will contribute to the OOC's overall communications portfolio producing creative, compelling and collaborative content with a focus on engaging, informing and inspiring the internal UCSF community.
The DIC should be a versatile, flexible and collaborative leader who can create alignment in a decentralized, matrixed environment, and can influence outcomes by means of vision, credibility, and domain expertise independently of positional authority.
