Reporting to the Executive Director of Communications, the Assistant Director of Web and Digital Design will be responsible for bringing to life The Data Science Institute???s (DSI) brand with speed and conviction, while maintaining high standards for original concept and detailed execution. S/he will oversee the design and management of digital content to DSI???s various web properties and social media. The Assistant Director will serve as the single point of contact that enables the digital communication of the work conducted at The Data Science Institute.
Responsibilities
Lead the creation of innovative content presentations for DSI???s main website including:
News stories
Events;
Photo and image galleries;
Multimedia presentations;
Data visualizations, graphs, charts, and interactive graphics, and infographics;
Slide decks.
Oversee the development and implementation of new websites and enhancements to DSI???s existing site leveraging ad hoc support fromColumbia University???s web technical team
Design visual stories for the Institute???s website, including creating images and infographics;
Serve as the main point of contact for University web personnel to determine web needs and ensure CUIT and other vendors to meet those needs on a timely basis;
Compile and interpret reports on website data using digital analytics, including Google;
Maintain a repository of digital graphical images for all media use and provide appropriate news and video content to the Columbia University website and outside media as directed;
Design innovative methods to utilize social media to advance the Institute???s mission;
Integrate emerging technologies and best practices into our website and digital properties;
Design and style content for electronic newsletters;
Routine maintenance of websites;
Other assignments as assigned/required.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor???s degree required or equivalent in education, training, and experience, plus at least six (6) years of related experience.
Proven ability to create and edit drawn images and photographs, style text for digital use, design web pages and websites, ; excellent written communication skills necessary.
Must have demonstrated experience in information architecture, web UX and visual design, and front-end web development.
Must be proficient in all Mac OS and Windows operating systems; various software applications, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, in particular Photoshop, HTML editor, Drupal, Keynote, and FTP clients; and various scripting languages and web development tools, including (X)HTML, CSS, Javascript/JQuery, and PHP.
Experience managing content in the Drupal Content Management System and demonstrated ability to learn other CMS platforms as needed.
Familiarity with Powerpoint a plus.
Must be an active user of social media with a focus on audience engagement and advancing the Institute brand and voice.
Must be creative, a team player, and a self-starter.
