Job Description:
Performs skilled tasks in support of web content for activities of the Library. Maintains currency and reliability of web content. This is a full time position covered by the terms of a collective bargaining unit agreement. This postion is remote eligible.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities
- Works with supervisor and library staff to develop, maintain, and update web site and social media content with a focus on accuracy, timeliness, and content strategy
- Prepares and publishes web content using a variety of web publishing frameworks, including content management systems such as Wordpress and Drupal, and markup languages, such as HTML and CSS
- Posts Library content for web-based delivery via standard content management and file transfer interfaces
- Assists supervisor in developing, coordinating, modifying, proofreading, preparing, and publishing of graphic layouts and web content for the library, based on goals, audience, and user experience
- Maintains the currency of Library-wide communication materials by posting news and updates via web sites, social networking, digital signage, and print media
- Creates, edits, customizes images and vector graphics for Library websites and applications using graphic design software including Adobe Creative suite
- Designs and delivers sitemaps, wireframes, and mockups for Library web projects utilizing User Experience (UX) tools
- Administers LibCal system to manage data collection and publication of Library hours
- Uses standard tools and best practices to check web pages for validity and accessibility compliance and corrects or refers problems as necessary
- Assists in the development and conducting of training and provides support for library staff on use of web publishing frameworks, guidelines, and content management systems
- Stays current with web accessibility standards and industry best practices
- Trains and directs the work of student assistants
- Performs related duties as required
Supervisor: Head of Library Discovery Applications and Design, Brown University Library
Works independently under general direction; makes independent judgments and decisions within scope of library policies and procedures.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Communications or a related field or equivalent experience
- 2 years of experience supporting administration of a content management system (e.g., Drupal, Wordpress)
- Ability to write for a specialized audience
- Excellent computer skills, ability to use standard computer software packages
- Experience with markup languages, including HTML and CSS
- Experience with PHP preferred
- Experience with graphic design software, including Adobe Creative suite
- Knowledge of web accessibility standards
- Knowledge of industry best practices
- Knowledge of web architecture
- User Experience (UX) skills, including the ability to design and deliver sitemaps, wireframes, and mockups
- Basic Linux/UNIX permission and file management skills
- Capacity to learn new technologies and systems necessary to maintain effective job performance
- Familiarity with print, web and/or video development desirable
- Good oral, written, and visual communication skills
- Ability to interpret complicated instructions and use judgment within established procedures
- Ability to work without close supervision
- Ability to interact favorably with co-workers and library users
- Ability to perform detailed work accurately with reasonable speed
- Good problem-solving skills
- Good organizational skills with excellent attention to detail
- Successful completion of a test may be required
- Possesses a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive campus.
