About the position
Do you have a dedication to getting the facts absolutely right, finding the most credible and credentialed sources, and maintaining the full trust of readers? Do thorny questions about the transparency of journalistic practices or the role of social media in journalism excite you? Wirecutter is seeking a research and standards editor to lead its research department and help refine and uphold a rigorous set of journalistic standards for its 100-person newsroom.
As research and standards editor, you will ensure an airtight fact-checking process, maintain Wirecutter’s editorial integrity, work closely with the deputy editor to adjudicate and uphold our ethical standards, act as the final authority on matters of Wirecutter’s research procedures, and manage a small research team. This role has the potential to be remote.
Conceive and run workflows for our research process, taking a piece from its pre-publication form to on-site publication.
Act as the final word on Wirecutter’s research department, determining and maintaining our guidelines for quotations, sourcing, corrections, and transparency, among other needs.
Partner with other editorial departments (senior editors and writers of various subject areas, production, copy edit) to do the best possible cross-functional work.
Manage research team to ensure it fulfills Wirecutter’s mission of fact-based, well-researched, highly trustworthy reporting.
Partner with deputy editor to create and maintain Wirecutter’s standards department, helping to adjudicate matters of ethics as it relates to our journalists.
Exceptional organizational and planning skills
Proven track record of success with extremely detail-oriented work
Experience working with large and distributed workforces
Passionate interest in maintaining standards and processes for a large journalistic organization
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and in person
Ability to recruit, retain and motivate team; willingness to delegate responsibilities and ability to effectively lead and build team cohesion
