Fundamental Objectives of this Position:
The director is primarily responsible for developing and administering the flow of athletic news about the University to the media, and representing the University to the media at athletic contest. The position is an integral part of the Athletic Department and represents a major component of the information flow to the Ohio Athletic Conference and NCAA. The director reports to the Director of Athletics and must be able to interact and communicate with the coaches of various athletic teams, as well as local, regional and national media. The position will also have a dotted line reporting to the University marketing department.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Prepares news releases and serves as media liaison for local newspapers and radio stations; primary, secondary, and extended newspapers (metropolitan, dailies, weeklies), radio stations, wire services, and TV stations; hometown news media of student-athletes; and regional, state and national magazines.
Responsible for all photographic needs for the athletic department including media requests, headshots, team.
Responds to media requests for specific news articles, photography sessions, radio interviews, TV segments, and features for publications.
Provides pre-game and in-game statistical information and notes plus any other data required.
Responds to statistical and other report requirements for the NCAA, OAC, intercollegiate opponents, various periodicals, television stations, wire services, and other print and electronic media
Responsible for facilitating video streaming of athletic events online and supervising the broadcasting of athletic events.
Prepares and designs any materials that would assist in promoting and publicizing the 24 intercollegiate athletic teams.
Responsible for the University of Mount Union athletics website including feature and outcome stories, athletic contest results and recaps, player profiles, and up-to-date statistics.
Utilizes social media sources including, but not limited to, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Snapchat to promote Mount Union's athletic programs, student-athletes, and alumni.
Assists in supporting the brand of the University by ensuring the use of target messaging in promotional materials, including the website, social media, and promotional and recruitment efforts.
Maintain historical records for the teams, update hall of fame kiosks
Perform other job-related duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics
Essential responsibilities of the position:
Ability to effectively communicate with the media.
Availability to work evenings and weekends in addition to the regular day
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Ability to write, edit and/or develop articles, reports, and publications.
Ability to effectively supervise assistant sports information directors, student personnel, statisticians, and complete all associated personnel actions in a timely and accurate manner.
Ability to accurately prepare and maintain records and reports.
Must have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to work well with supervisors, coworkers, coaches, campus community, and the public.
Minimum Qualifications:
A bachelor's degree is required, a Master's degree preferred as well as at least two years of experience in the field of sports information is required. The candidate must have excellent verbal, interpersonal, and written communication skills; experience in working with student-athletes; demonstrated experience in the successful completion of multiple projects and responsibilities; and interest and willingness to be part of the marketing team. The candidate must have the necessary skills to effectively utilize administrative computer systems, such as Microsoft Office products, web and publication design products, and the Internet.
This position is required to attend assigned University compliance training as communicated by the University.
