The Assistant Dean of Research Administration will be the focal point for initiating, developing and leveraging contacts and relationships with various government offices, foundations, companies and industries aligned with the Colleges strategic research and training initiatives. They will be responsible for identifying funding opportunities; creating and executing plans to coordinate the activities of multiple inter- and intra-departmental/college faculty, sometimes with institutions outside of the university, to produce a complete and cogent funding proposal. The incumbent will run internal funding programs, such as the Deans Catalyst Award program, and will lead reporting and publicity efforts pertaining to the Colleges research activities. The incumbent will work with the Office of Industry Engagement to facilitate connecting college research with corporate sponsored research and partnerships.
The Assistant Dean of Research Administration will develop and maintain resources and infrastructure to assist faculty in developing proposals. They will lead a team that provides direct support of proposal preparation and submission and award negotiation and management for some Engineering (ENG) departments. This team will also provide ENG-wide support for large-scale proposal development and submission across departments and centers.
Employee must have working knowledge of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR)/Uniform Guidance (UG). Experience with developing and administering research projects with industry is also desired. This position will report to the Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Development.
Research Development and Administration
- Proactively identify and curate potential major funding opportunities from private and public sources that match the Colleges interdisciplinary strengths and strategic vision. Work closely with Federal Relations for early insight in to government-research priority areas and creating ENG teams to meet those priorities.
- Coordinate and facilitate large multi-investigator teams to apply for grants that span convergent and interdisciplinary areas across departments and centers. Ensure that the themes of diversity and inclusion are interwoven in to these opportunities via a close working relationship with the AD of Outreach and Diversity.
- Oversight of targeted funding opportunities (i.e. student fellowships, faculty young investigator awards), where support is provided by the ENG Grants Administrator. Provide targeted proposal assistance and/or workshops when required.
- Work with the Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Development on feeding stories to BUs Office of Research for publicity on internal news sites (i.e. the Brink) and to ENG Marketing/Communications for quick news releases (i.e. to the ENG Twitter, Facebook and other social media pages).
- Provide a continuum of support for junior faculty to achieve research success. Engage with Federal Relations and other offices for dedicated information sessions, coordinate the NSF CAREER proposal internal review process, serve as a resource for proposal development and award management questions.
Management of ENG Grants Support Team:
- Supervise a team of ENG Department (Grants) Administrators, including an administrator, whose primary responsibility is preparing ENG-wide, large-scale research and training proposals and managing ENG internal funding opportunities.
- Provide direction, training and mentoring to staff; continually assess the needs and resolve issues of research-active faculty related to research administration. Coordinate best practices for pre- and post- grant award functions for departmental grants personnel. Work with department directors to ensure that departments have sufficient grants support and provide input in to dept. administrators annual reviews.
- Coordinate activities such as creation and updating of a repository of ENG data and templates (bio-sketches, facilities/resources, successful past applications, etc.) to be used by all ENG faculty and grants staff.
Internal Research and Related Activities:
- Manage the re-vamped Deans Catalyst Award (DCA) process based on the ENG Strategic Plan.
- Serve as final proposal reviewer and signatory for the College of Engineering for almost all grant proposals. Coordinate with other Deans for proposals that need additional review.
- Resource for faculty for grants administration questions and issues. Troubleshoot matters and work with OSP, PAFO, Compliance and other offices as needed to achieve resolution.
- Liaison to Provost Office for research activities and internal proposal competitions.
- Provide research/funding reports on a regular basis.
Corporate Partnerships:
- Strategically work with the offices of Industry Engagement, Technology Development and Foundation Relations to proactively target and build external partnerships for both research and educational programs. Lead the proposal development and award management that result from those interactions.
