The Bay Area News Group, which includes The Mercury News and East Bay Times, has an opening for an editor who will use social media, newsletters and other platforms to grow and more deeply engage our audience. The job requires excellent news judgment, a writing style that connects with a newsletter and social audience and facility with digital storytelling and social media practices, tools and analytics.
The engagement editor:
Participates in a variety of audience engagement efforts, including social media, newsletters, browser and push notifications and more to increase readership and click-through rates and drive incremental traffic that leads to subscriber acquisition and retention.
Takes the lead in curating and creating social content on BANG’s company pages and accounts to increase our social audience and encourage deeper engagement that leads to digital subscriptions.
Works with teams and individuals across the newsroom to develop audience engagement strategies around specific stories or topics, including live events and our most significant enterprise efforts.
Assists with our growing newsletter program, including curating or writing newsletter content as needed.
Employs analytics to determine what content performs best across engagement platform, works with the audience team leadership to set goals and uses data to inform decisions that meet those goals.
Communicates findings to the rest of the audience team and broader newsroom.
Helps the newsroom leadership improve its engagement strategy and, as needed, provides training for other staff members involved with newsletter writing and production.
Other duties may include occasional website production, including managing the homepage and other tasks as needed.
The successful candidate:
Demonstrates strong interpersonal, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills and an ability to work with people at all levels and across departments and divisions.
Communicates effectively in both oral and written form.
Has the ability to work on deadline in a 24/7 news environment in one of the nation’s most competitive media markets. Speed of performance and accuracy is crucial.
Has the ability to develop and execute projects in a timely fashion with little or no supervision.
Is self-starting and self-monitoring.
