University Marketing is seeking a full-time, front-end web developer to build innovative, well-engineered websites and to help inform the online strategy for the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
University Marketing creates websites that serve the entire UW-Madison campus. The university's gateway site (www.wisc.edu), the official UW Wordpress theme, and the campus news site and alumni magazine are a few of the web properties in our portfolio. More recently we've launched several showcase sites including exploreuw.wisc.edu, origins.wisc.edu, and chazen.wisc.edu. Our ideal candidate will embrace working with digital and user experience designers to create more sites and storytelling experiences like these.
We follow modern best practices in front-end web development, starting with semantically meaningful markup, progressive enhancement, and responsive design. We work primarily with open source platforms and tools -- WordPress, Laravel, Rails, and static site generators such as Eleventy -- in an environment where we have the flexibility and opportunity to innovate and create. We are constantly learning while we work as part of a team to design, build, and deploy custom solutions. In fact the nature of our work requires this passion for learning.
The web developer position requires organization, flexibility and a sense of humor. You will collaborate with designers, user experience experts, and developers. This position reports to the Web Director and requires a team player with an ability to function effectively in the highly complex and decentralized environment of UW-Madison.
Leads and participates in the design, development, layout, coding, maintenance, and support of websites and applications to meet the needs of functional users. Designs, develops, and deploys custom interactive web applications and integrates logically designed databases.
10% Evaluates and implements open source and commercial products to meet project needs
60% Designs, develops, and deploys web applications and integrate databases based on relevant website coding scripts
10% Serves as a subject matter expert, consultant, and main point of contact for internal and external stakeholders regarding website and application options, design, maintenance, and support
10% Investigates, resolves, and recommends solutions to website problems and performance issues such as speed of access
5% Contributes to website strategy and recommends changes to leadership
5% Monitors website use and trends, status of projects, and reviews work for completion/quality
