HIAS seeks a visionary communications professional to lead the organization’s editorial content strategy and production, showcasing and promoting the impact of HIAS’ work in the United States and 16 countries around the world.
As managing editor of the HIAS.org website, the Senior Director, Content will develop an editorial process to ensure a steady stream of high-quality storytelling, news and feature articles, videos, reports and other materials to raise awareness of HIAS programs, partnerships, staff and beneficiaries.
Reporting to the Vice President, Communications, this position supervises the content team and Press Officer, and they are responsible for the tone, style, accuracy and credibility of communications designed to reach varied audiences, both domestic and international.
The ideal candidate will be an outstanding writer and editor with the leadership ability, journalism and communication skills, experience in non-profit communications and passion to take the HIAS content team to the next level. Key attributes include an active interest in U.S. and international current affairs, policy and humanitarian work, with an excellent track record of building and managing teams to produce great editorial content for a large organization.
Note, this position is based at our headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland or our office in New York, New York, and we will consider a remote option for applicants who live outside of commuting distance to either of our offices and are based in other states in which we are registered (Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin).
Oversees and manages the content team, developing and driving editorial strategy and processes to produce a steady stream of high-quality material promoting the public mission and advocacy efforts of the world’s oldest refugee protection organization.
Maintains awareness of HIAS priorities and relationships with peers across multiple programmatic and geographical areas; works with key stakeholders to ensure content production reflects the range of HIAS’ work and reaches multiple audiences.
Acts as managing editor of the HIAS.org website; generates story ideas, supervises staff and, when appropriate, freelance writers, photographers and videographers.
Supervises the Press Officer; coordinates media strategy with public relations vendor.
Responsible for developing and maintaining high ethical and quality standards, as well as the content style guide.
Oversees the production of statements articulating HIAS’ position on legislative and regulatory matters, as well as news related to our work; develops press releases as required.
Collaborates on HIAS campaigns, report launches, events and emergency response.
Monitors publications, social media and other sources for relevant and timely stories related to our work; maintains awareness of peer organizations’ work and content.
Advises and coordinates content strategy with HIAS regional and country offices.
Coordinates communication output with HIAS’ U.S. resettlement network affiliates.
Writes and posts content to HIAS website and social media as needed.
