Job Description:
The Office of Multicultural Student Affairs at Iowa State University is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Coordinator of Multicultural Programming. This position will be responsible for planning large and small-scale programming, oversee passive programming via social media, and coordinate the Academic Program for Excellence, a summer scholarship program for incoming students. Applicants should possess skills in and experience with written and oral communication, serving multicultural students and students from diverse backgrounds, and programming in a college setting. This position will be hired as a Student Services Specialist I.
SUPERVISORY ASSIGNMENT/RELATIONSHIPS:
The Program Coordinator reports directly to the Assistant Director within the Multicultural Student Affairs Office. The Program Coordinator may supervise 2 graduate assistants and 1-2 undergraduate student employees during the academic year and an additional 2-3 graduate assistants and 5-7 undergraduate students during the summer APEX program.
POSITION PURPOSE/JOB SUMMARY:
The person in this position is responsible for providing leadership in developing major programming for the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs (MSA). This programming includes large and small student events held throughout the year and the Academic Program for Excellence (APEX) and related retention programming and academic intervention for program participants. Additionally, the coordinator will assist with MSA outreach programming and contribute to MSA assessment efforts.
The successful candidates will possess knowledge of the experiences of multicultural college students and have a willingness to work in a flexible environment, understanding that the needs of students and the needs of the institution will evolve over time. The successful candidates will also have a basic knowledge of university academic programs, general academic regulations, familiarity with issues/concerns related to serving students of color. Exemplary written and oral communication skills; strong organizational skills; and ability to multitask are also required to be successful in this role.
Direct Scholarship Program
Coordinate recruitment activities related to the APEX scholarship, counsel prospective students, and their families during on and off campus recruitment activities
Guide application, acceptance, and appeals processes for scholarship students
Plan and coordinate APEX academic programming including course management and supervision of instructors
Manage scholarship program events and student development initiatives through the summer and academic year
Direct assessment of scholarship programs effectiveness and guide improvement efforts to increase the academic success, retention, and graduation rates for students
Supervise graduate assistants and peer mentors, including training, managing workflow and evaluating performance
Collaborate with campus departments (e.g., Office of Admissions, college student services offices) for multicultural student recruitment and APEX programming
Offer professional guidance and maintain knowledge of and changes in procedures for admission, financial aid and housing
Identify and address early immersion issues facing first-year students of color and on-going transition concerns related to retention of continuing scholarship students - Coordinate with and refer scholarship students to other campus support networks (including academic advisors for major selection, college Directors of Multicultural Student Success (DMSS) for academic support, student activities to increase student involvement, colleges for internships/study abroad opportunities
Lead academic outreach and intervention processes for scholarship students (e.g., collaborate with campus academic advisors, identify pre-collegiate factors, conduct midterm interventions, assist students navigating institutional processes).
Manage Academic, Social, and Cultural Programming
Plan and execute large-scale in-person programming for multicultural students and strategic use of social media for passive programming
Plan and execute cultural events including, collaborating with cultural heritage month planning groups across campus, academic support initiatives, personal and professional development programming for students.
Assess current programmatic efforts and make changes and improvements as needed to accomplish programming goals
Supervise programming graduate assistants and undergraduate student assistants
Serve as a resource person to faculty, staff and students working with multicultural programming initiatives
Assist with campus recruitment and retention efforts
Represent MSA on university committees and taskforces related to multicultural student success.
Participate in prospective and new student outreach efforts
Collaborate on MSA assessment efforts including but not limited to retention rates, cohort comparisons, intervention effectiveness and university retention initiatives
Provides early, ongoing, and individualized guidance for multicultural students in support of MSA programs and initiatives
