Position summary:
The Rice University Office of Public Affairs is seeking a versatile internal communications professional to provide strong writing and editing skills in support of university initiatives and objectives. She/He handles communications focused primarily on the campus community, including faculty, staff, students and alumni. This would include support for the Office of the President, Administration, Human Resources, Information Technology, the Crisis Management Committee and the Board of Trustees. Additional responsibilities would include researching and writing web and marketing copy, magazine articles and special projects.
Essential functions: - Research and write compelling copy for informational, promotional and public relations projects to support university initiatives and objectives.
- Write and edit communications on behalf of university leadership.
- Produce magazine articles, features, brochures, press releases, newsletters, Web pages, marketing collateral and other types of materials.
- Edit copy for accuracy, effectiveness and Rice AP style.
- Write copy or repurpose content for the web and social media.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree.
- Three (3) years of related experience in journalism, public relations or related communication fields.
- Demonstrated talent for translating complex subject matter into engaging, accurate and concise copy written in terms understandable to laypersons.
- Strong people skills and ability to work in a deadline-driven, results-oriented environment with a wide variety of team members, such as graphic designers, web developers, media and PR professionals, marketers and publication producers, and with a wide variety of clients, including the administrators, faculty, students, alumni and the news media.
- Ability to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously with minimal supervision, adhering to priorities and meeting deadlines.
- Proficiency with AP style.
- Proven ability to create engaging written content for multiple communication platforms.
Preferred Qualifications - Bachelor's degree in journalism, English or related fields.
- Work experience in higher education.
Working conditions:
Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with occasional evenings or weekend work to meet deadlines.
