Job Summary The Senior Specialist, Science Communications & Media Relations works with the Director of Enterprise Communications to develop and implement a proactive, strategic science communications plan that promotes Boston Children's Hospital's vast scientific research and clinical care across the enterprise. This role is responsible for coordinating scientific and research-related media relations efforts to enhance Boston Children's profile and reputation in leading research globally, as well as to ensure exceptional partnerships with stakeholders including research leaders, Principle Investigators and physicians across the organization.
The Senior Specialist, Science Communications & Media Relations will:
Develop and execute communications plans that serve to elevate the research image and brand of Boston Children's Hospital across local, regional, national and international news outlets.
Work collaboratively with the media relations team, as well as social media, marketing, content, web teams to write and edit a wide range of science content.
Follow scientific and health journals, research presentations and other sources to identify the Hospital's authors and assess news value.
Receive and strategically manage science related media inquiries. Identify and vet potential science stories, covering basic, translational and clinical research.
Interview scientists, write and edit science content for various hospital communications - press releases, pitches, social media content, sometimes on tight deadlines.
Translate complex scientific terminology and concepts for clinical, scientific and lay audiences, with high attention to accuracy, knowledge of scientific concepts, and outstanding ability to engage faculty and researchers and their findings.
Suggest and collaborate on multimedia content with graphic designers, photographer, videographer and/or animator.
Brief and prepare senior leaders, faculty, and staff for major interviews.
Identify key topics and trends in the news that match our areas of strength and proactively connects media with our experts.
Work closely with others in Marketing and Communications (e.g., web, social media, marketing owned content, internal communications, etc.) to schedule, develop and share content.
Develop and manage productive relationships with senior leadership, physicians, clinical staff, faculty, and other key stakeholders.
Track and report on key performance indicators and progress toward communication and outreach goals, per media relations plans.
To qualify, you must have:
A Bachelor's degree in journalism, science, or closely related field, and 7+ years of work experience in science and medical writing.
Prior experience in scientific writing and media relations is preferred.
Excellent communication skills (written as well as verbal and interpersonal) and the ability to work collaboratively with other staff.
The ability to evaluate research papers for news/storytelling value, including basic laboratory science, and skill in interviewing scientists.
The ideal candidate has a passion for writing and communicating science and the ability to understand and translate science for a lay audience.
