The Iowa State Athletics Department is accepting applications for the position of communications specialist I. This position will serve as the primary communications contact for assigned Division I intercollegiate sports (initially will be the primary contact for women's volleyball and men's and women's track/field) and be the liaison between ISU Athletics and targeted national, regional and local news media, cyclones.com, cyclones.tv, and current social media platforms.

• Assist to develop and implement a strategic communications plan for assigned sports to reach both internal and external audiences
• Responsible for conceptualizing and composing effective feature stories, including researching facts, conducting interviews, analyzing information, selecting topics and information that is not known or easily available to our audience
• Work closely with coaching staff and media outlets, and possess the knowledge and skills for independent judgement when dealing with crisis management in an unpredictable environment
• Assists with webpage and social media content management and creation of graphics
• Monitors social media and engages with external audiences
• Monitors various publications and electronic sources of news and commentary for potential relevance
• Responsible for adhering to the rules and regulations of the department, University, Big 12 Conference, and NCAA

The ideal candidates will have good creative writing and thorough fact-checking skills, proficiency creating graphics, be highly organized and able to meet tight deadlines, skill utilizing multiple media platforms including high social media creativity and judgement, solid knowledge of sports writing and rules and statistics related to assigned sports. Candidates are expected to be committed to multiculturalism and working with a diverse population. Must be available to work at assigned events that often occur on evenings and weekends, and requires traveling with the team including some overnight trips.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree

Preferred Qualifications:

Media relations experience for intercollegiate or professional athletics communications programs. 
Experience covering similar NCAA DI sports and using sport statistical tracking software. 
Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suites software.
Experience with graphic design and managing social media content for business.
