The NY Daily News is looking for its next Director of Audience. This is a critical leadership role in an evolving newsroom covering America’s most dynamic city. Our Director of Audience will be a collaborative leader who will oversee our audience strategy, including content development, search, social, newsletters and more. Our goal is to bring maximum visibility to the great journalism this newsroom produces and help convince those readers that this work is worth paying for. You will report directly to the Executive Editor but work with corporate partners in advertising, product and digital subscriptions as well. The right candidate should have a proven track record of hitting audience goals including overall engagement growth, subscription targets and newsletter referrals. More importantly, we are looking for someone who can build and lead a high-performing audience team while also working effectively across the entire newsroom and organization. The right person will be driven by our mission of producing vital public interest journalism that makes the communities we serve better places to live.
Think both tactically and strategically as you identify, develop and implement daily and long-term opportunities to increase the reach of the New York Daily News, tapping all available digital platforms including but not limited to website, search, social and newsletters.
Design and champion creative approaches to storytelling geared to dovetail with the changing demands of habits of readers.
Analyze our existing readership and identify new and diverse audiences, tailoring content strategies that serve both.
Collaborate with editors, reporters and other newsroom staff on creative approaches to storytelling and best practices.
Work with other departments and stakeholder across the organization to help design acquisition and monetization strategies.
Define goals for and track the performance of our publishing platforms — including the website, mobile apps, social media accounts, newsletters etc.
Manage a team that will assist you in driving new readers.
A proven track record in designing and implementing an effective audience strategy at a media or related company,with a thorough understanding of online business models and approaches.
Undergraduate degree in a related field (journalism, communications, marketing, analytics, business) required.
Deep understanding of the operations of all digital channels – website, mobile apps, social, email, etc. .
Detailed knowledge of major web and social analytics tools such as Google Analytics, Omniture, Parsely, and/or Chartbeat.
Rich understanding of all audience development channels – SEO, social, newsletter, and partnerships.
Entrepreneurial, digitally savvy, with exceptional analytical, quantitative, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
