The Goldman School of Public Policy (GSPP) is consistently ranked as one of the top graduate schools of public policy in the nation, and is currently ranked as the premier school of Policy Analysis in the country by US News & World Report. It functions as a small, professional school at the University of California, Berkeley which prepares graduate students for careers in public leadership.
GSPP offers the following degree programs: The Master of Public Policy (MPP) program emphasizes the applied and quantitative dimensions of policy making. The Master of Public Affairs (MPA) focuses on policy management and leadership for mid-career professionals. The Master of Development Practice (MDP) studies innovative and sustainable approaches to global development. GSPP also offers a doctoral program, an undergraduate minor, and several concurrent degrees.
The Goldman School's faculty represent the top academic names and research agendas in their respective disciplinary fields, which include economics, political science, law, statistics, social psychology, and engineering.

We recruiting for one position to work specifically with the Master of Public Affairs program with some or all of the following expertise:
- expertise in advising early, mid and senior career professionals
- expertise in advising students interested in international development policy and/or sustainable development
- expertise in advising students interested in domestic policy and/or sustainable development issues
The Career Services Specialist will report to the Managing Director of Career Services, and will be active members of the Goldman School Student and Career Services Teams.

Responsibilities
Career Counseling & Coaching:
Provides career counseling in particularly complex areas that require specialized expertise for domestic and international master's degree students who are early/mid/senior career levels who are investigating careers in public policy, public affairs, international development, domestic sustainable development, and related fields.
Specifically:
- Provides career counseling and coaching for up to 80-90 graduate students on all aspects of their career development including career planning, goal setting, and career searches. Includes counseling in complex areas that require specialized expertise, such as mid-life transitions, balancing work and family, imposter syndrome, leadership skills, international student hiring in the US, and diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Maintains detailed metrics and notes from student advising sessions and tracks career progress and outcomes for internships, practicums, capstones, and full-time employment. Provides regular reports to the Academic and Career Services teams.
- Maintains relationships with alumni and tracks their career progress; recommends and invites alumni to participate in career panels and events.
Career Programming, Event Planning, Marketing and Outreach:
- Researches, designs and delivers broad and complex career-focused programs, workshops and events that incorporate the needs of students, including career development workshops, employer sessions, career panels, networking events, and other career-related programs.
- Conducts quantitative and qualitative assessments through surveys and other tools to collect information on student career interests and other information as needed to inform decisions on career programs, workshops and events. Collaborates with GSPP Career Services Team and Managing Director of Career Services in program/event design and development. Collaborates with Dean of Students and MPA Associate Director on specialized programming for the MPA program.
- Implements online and in-person career events; provides workshop and program support to event lead for the successful execution of events.
- Provides support for events led by the Student Services Team including new student orientations, graduation, and other major events.
- Evaluates existing programs, workshops and events, and manages improvement processes.
- Develops and updates written and electronic materials about GSPP career programs and services, and presents this information to new students.
Employer Relations & Industry Expertise:
- Develops and maintains relationships with companies, organizations, recruiting staff, and industry professionals (including alumni) relating to career opportunities for students and alumni.
- Develops expertise in career industries and opportunities of interest to students, spanning the public, non-profit and private sectors, US domestic and international industries.
- Researches and stays informed on the latest economic and employment trend data.
Technology & Systems:
- Oversees career program technical systems, and uses thorough knowledge of career program and information systems to provide input to applications and improve web sites and other supporting technologies.
- Conducts quantitative and qualitative assessments through surveys and other tools to track student career progress.
- Learns and manages GSPP's career platforms, creates and troubleshoots student accounts; learns UC Berkeley student systems.
- Regularly updates students' career information and materials on program website, course pages and career platforms where applicable.
- Provides weekly summary of relevant career opportunities to all GSPP student populations.
Admissions:
- Participates in the annual admissions review process as needed by GSPP degree programs; reviews applications and makes recommendations to admissions committee.
- Connects current students and alumni with prospective applicants to promote engagement and yield.
- Presents timely information about Goldman School career programs and services to prospective and incoming students.
- Provides time sensitive student information to the Career Services team, Managing Director of Career Services, Dean of Students, Dean and other stakeholders as needed for special projects and initiatives.
- Other duties as assigned, including mandatory training and UC Learning exercises. May require occasional evening and weekend work.
Required Qualifications
- Advanced knowledge of career development theories, career coaching techniques, career decision making, learning styles, and job search techniques.
- Working knowledge of the public policy, public affairs and international development job markets spanning the public, non-profit and private sector (in the US and internationally) required, advanced knowledge in these areas is preferred.
- Highly effective problem identification and problem solving skills, presentation skills, verbal communication, written communication, relationship-building, teamwork, and organization skills.
- Must have demonstrated ability to lead seminars and other training programs that involve public speaking. Ability to do public presentations, career panels, and speak persuasively to constituents.
- Advanced project management skills, sufficient to create, plan and implement new projects in service to the School's student and faculty advisors.
Preferred Qualifications
- Excellent knowledge of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; and learning and motivation.
- Detailed knowledge of hiring practices, recruiting/ staffing methods and employment trends for early/mid/senior career professionals, US domestic and international.
- Advanced experience working with people from diverse cultures, including working with multicultural students and ESL.
- Excellent computer skills and the ability to quickly adapt to new software programs and online resources.
- Advanced knowledge of LinkedIn and social media tools; working knowledge of survey platforms including SurveyMonkey and other online survey tools.
- Advanced knowledge of (or can quickly learn) UC programs, career services, employer, alumni, and faculty needs and expectations, recruiting and staffing methods, employment trends.
- Experience with workshop and program design, event planning and management.
- Excellent judgment in handling sensitive information, and exhibiting care with confidential data and records.
- Advanced degree preferred.
Salary & Benefits
Annual salary will be commensurate with experience within the range of $69,200.00 - $101,500.00.
