ABOUT THE JOB: The position conducts professional communications work in the areas of marketing and public/internal relations on behalf of LSBE, and works collaboratively with LSBE’s Editor/Writer and UMD’s Office of Marketing and Public Relations. The position is responsible for programmatic communications and marketing planning and implementation, content creation, directing LSBE student marketing agency activities and operations, project and event management, and the overall coordination of marketing, communication, and public relations efforts of LSBE.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: â— BA/BS degree in Communications, Journalism, Management, Marketing, Art, Events Management, Graphic Design, or related field, plus two years of professional experience, or six years combined equivalent education and experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: â— Strong team skills, electronic communications and social media skills. â— Evidence managing engaging social media presence. â— Experience working with higher education institution(s). â— Experience with event planning and management. â— Excellent organizational skills, to include multitasking and time management, and ability to prioritize tasks and manage projects. â— Excellent written communication skills. â— Evidence of producing quality promotional materials using specialized software packages (such as Adobe Creative Suite/Cloud).
COMMUNICATIONS SPECIALIST DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: The following duties are typical for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.
(10%) Marketing and Public Relations Administration: â— Communication Planning: â— Develop communication and marketing plans for events, services, and activities that are in line with a greater LSBE communication and/or marketing strategy. â— Assess effectiveness of communication campaigns through use of appropriate analytics. â— Budget and Operations: â— Create and manage a communication budget. â— Manage student and freelance resources. â— Manage paid advertising.
(45%) Coordinate all marketing and communication activities within LSBE. â— Engage with other University colleges and departments, the media, and/or the public on questions, comments, or requests for information, while creating inclusive opportunities for relationship building with varied and diverse audiences. â— Coordinate marketing, public relations and communication efforts of LSBE with UMD Office of Marketing and Public Relations and LSBE’s Editor/Writer. â— Serve as the final coordinating authority for all communication materials. â— Traditional Marketing and Public Relations: â— In conjunction with LSBE’s Editor/Writer: â— Develop content for news articles for feature stories for release both internally and externally to various communications media, such as websites, newspaper space, social media and public announcements. â— Create marketing and promotional materials, including a college-wide newsletter, brochures, announcements for LSBE departments, advising, admissions, development, and collegiate programs and events. Provide written copy for proposals, promotional brochures and other related written materials in support of collegiate outreach, advancement and public relations. Monitor the use of marketing/branding materials to ensure message consistency within the college, and with the campus and the university system. â— Create brochures, pamphlets, newsletters, catalogs and other related publications with consideration to diverse end users. Handle production of visual materials such as charts, diagrams, posters and photographs. Review materials for copy and content editing and re-write for style and clarity of presentation. â— Manage a central repository of communication materials. â— Digital Marketing and Public Relations: â— Develop and manage content for LSBE web site and sub-sites, including the LSBE portal, and work with departments and programs within LSBE to assist them in content management. Work with LSBE Technology Coordinator and others at UMD on overall web design and delivery. â— Develop and update calendar of events for LSBE. â— Make social media posts and coordinate social media presence relevant to a wide range of people with different socio-economic, ethnic and lifestyle differences. â— Analyze web usage to identify trends for new media communication tools and social media.
(20%) Events Management: â— Create, implement, and evaluate LSBE events and programs. â— Depending on the event, assume primary or shared responsibility for LSBE events such as the Distinguished Speakers Series, Unit Change Team (UCT) events, Professor for a Day, Company Days, Student Showcase, Student Entrepreneurship Conference, spring awards, Scholarship Reception, Beta Gamma Sigma dinner, and departmental alumni events. â— Responsibilities include monitoring R.S.V.P.s name tags, table assignments, ordering and preparing items, coordinating photographer (if needed), catering, room scheduling and room arrangement for each function. Attend event, as required. â— Track LSBE event activity for AACSB accreditation. â— Coordinate audio/video capture of key events.
(15%) LSBE Student Marketing Agency: â— Identify and detail specifications for student projects/tasks. â— Meet with students regularly to ensure completion of assigned tasks. â— Coach students on project work and provide feedback to students on their output. â— Search and hire students for agency.
(10%) Other Duties as Assigned: â— Stay current and maintain up-to-date information on University policies and procedures. â— May serve on an internal LSBE committee. â— Other duties as assigned by LSBE Administrators.
