The Longo Laboratory in the Department of Neurology, Stanford University School of Medicine, seeks a highly motivated science writer that has the ability to compose and edit content for research articles for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals, literature reviews, and grant proposals. The ideal candidate for this position will have a Doctoral Degree (PhD degree, MD/PhD degree or a related degree) in Neurobiology, or a related scientific field, and will have had at least three to five years of experience in writing peer-reviewed journal articles, scientific literature reviews, proposal development and grant writing in a research and/or academic setting. This person will demonstrate an understanding of highly technical scientific reports and data, and, for grant proposals and web content, have the ability to translate technical or scholarly information into accessible language. The candidate should have a strong desire and ability to work in a collaborative, translational research group that operates at the interface of neuroscience/neurodegenerative disease, electrophysiology, bioinformatics, and novel therapeutic development. This is a full-time position with the opportunity to work remotely.

Duties include:
Develop and research ideas for written publication/communication on topics of moderate complexity.
Consult with internal and external customers to understand the need and purpose of a project.
Compose written material for diverse audiences, across a variety of channels.
Manage production of own publications/communications and adhere to deadlines.
Compose written material.

Develop, compile and edit supplemental materials that support written communication (i.e., backgrounders, biographies, executive talking points, and other related materials).
Establish and maintain extensive contacts with key sources (media, news services, community organizations and other targeted audiences) to identify story themes and newsworthy events to promote and disseminate information.
Maintain department style standards.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Doctoral Degree (PhD degree, MD/PhD degree or a related degree) in Neurobiology, or a related scientific field.
Minimum three to five years of experience in writing peer-reviewed journal articles, scientific literature reviews, and grant proposals in a research and/or academic setting.
Demonstrated success in writing peer-reviewed scientific journals, grant proposals, and web content.
Excellent writing, interpersonal, and oral communication skills with proven ability to present, write, edit, and organize thoughts in a clear, concise, and well-organized manner.
Ability to accurately translate technical or scholarly information into accessible language.
Familiarity with medical databases and online tools (e.g., PubMed) and Microsoft Office Suite.
Graphic design experience (i.e. familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud or BioRender) for scientific figures is preferred.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):
Bachelor's degree and five years of related experience, or a combination of education and related experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
Proven success in writing for publication in print, web, and other platforms.
Excellent writing, interpersonal, and oral communication skills with proven ability to present, write, edit, and organize thoughts in a clear, concise, and well-organized manner.
Ability to understand materials of moderate complexity and synthesize across multiple sources to produce materials for diverse audiences.
Ability to change voice and writing style to fit a particular audience and purpose.
Firm understanding of web technologies and applications, including social networking, social media tools, and current communication trends.
Excellent interpersonal skills and able to interact effectively with a diverse array of people, including senior leaders.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
Ability to manage and prioritize multiple deadlines.
Excellent time management skills.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
Frequently stand/walk, sit, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, and use a telephone, writing by hand.
