DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS, School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHASS), to spearhead the strategic direction, initiatives, planning, and execution of the holistic communications program within SHASS. Will lead a small team of communications professionals in presenting SHASS positively across a variety of media, managing internal and external resources to raise the school's visibility on campus, locally, nationally, and internationally; and play a key role in informing and connecting the SHASS community of faculty, students, staff, alumni, and those who would like to join in helping SHASS and MIT solve great problems to the benefit of the world. Responsibilities include developing and overseeing the school's approach to internal and external communications, including developing news stories and other forms of writing, media relations, digital design, web strategy, social media, and advising the dean on the development of strategic communications initiatives for the school.
Job Requirements
REQUIRED: bachelor's degree, preferably in English, communications, journalism, or related field; seven years' communications and/or public relations experience, preferably in a higher education setting; excellent writing, editing, and oral presentation skills; experience managing and developing staff and operations and working with an organization's senior leadership; demonstrated success developing and executing strategic communications plans for complex organizations; experience successfully advising people in high-level positions; and discretion and judgment with highly sensitive and confidential information. Must be able to quickly identify, analyze, and synthesize critical issues and work effectively in challenging situations; influence peers and motivate and persuade team members and diverse groups; and work in a fast-paced environment. PREFERRED: master's degree in a related field; experience with issues management; and broad knowledge of news media, public relations, and social media. Job #21586-11
