The Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project
Type: Full Time
Location: Negotiable for the right candidate; U.S. East Coast preferred
Application Deadline: Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and accepted no later than August 20, 2022.
The Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) is a dynamic, growing, global nonprofit media organization that is reinventing investigative journalism for the public good. By developing and equipping a global network of investigative journalists and publishing their stories, we expose crime and corruption so the public can hold power to account. We see a future where organized crime and corruption are drastically reduced and democracy is strengthened. Our global team includes editors, researchers, data engineers, security specialists, administrators, technologists, and strategists, each with areas of in-depth expertise.
The new director of individual giving will join OCCRP’s entrepreneurial partnerships team to spearhead individual giving, building on significant organizational growth and diversification of funding in recent years. We are seeking an experienced lead to take OCCRP’s public giving and membership program to the next level, including the cultivation and stewardship of major gifts.
In 2020, OCCRP launched its first membership program, inviting dedicated readers to become ‘accomplices’ in OCCRP’s fight for truth and justice – significantly increasing public donations year on year. This new role will spearhead creative public campaigns in coordination with our editorial team to build on this initial success, driving serious growth of the program and cultivating relationships with new individual givers to secure and sustain meaningful major gifts.
A successful candidate for this role will bring notable experience developing and managing a portfolio of donors; shaping and driving successful public fundraising campaigns; soliciting, cultivating, and stewarding individual donors; and securing major (five-seven figure) gifts. Passion for the role of investigative journalism in combating corruption, countering disinformation, ensuring accountability, and strengthening democracy around the world is key to building support for our mission – and building public understanding of the return on investment in our work. Strong writing and communication skills are a must as well as a willingness to shift gears to help accommodate team priorities and contribute to OCCRP’s wider fundraising goals and financial strength.

Develop and implement strategy with clear targets for individual giving and unrestricted gifts in coordination with OCCRP’s finance team

Directly cultivate relationships with and secure major gifts from new individual givers
Establish and implement an effective individual donor stewardship plan to ensure major gift retention and more significant investment from individual donors over time
Ensure donor due diligence in line with OCCRP’s Gift and Donation Acceptance Policy
Lead the production of virtual and in-person events in support of individual donor cultivation and stewardship
Draft fundraising proposals to secure new contributions from family foundations, major givers, and other donors as needed
Strong passion for and ability to articulate the power of investigative journalism to hold power to account, especially in the current global context
Outstanding interpersonal skills and commitment to advancing OCCRP’s mission
Strong knack for shaping persuasive public messaging and building a strong narrative
Demonstrated track record shaping and delivering successful public fundraising campaigns

Understanding of non-profit operations and the basics of financial compliance and due diligence
Ability to work with a global team, agility to accommodate time differences, and the patience and enthusiasm to build systems and efficiencies for a growing organization
Familiarity with the donor landscape for non-profit media and foundation operations, including experience working with private and public funders
Familiarity with/aptitude to communicate about issues of anti-corruption, financial crime, press freedom, investigative journalism, countering authoritarianism, and international development
Outstanding organizational skills and attention to detail

About The Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project
The last five decades have seen the dramatic globalization of organized crime and corruption, now totaling trillions of dollars every year. With the help of a “criminal services industry” — corrupt banks, law firms, registration agents, and lobbyists — criminal networks have steadily grown their markets, and the world’s most corrupt officials and tycoons easily loot, launder, and hide stolen money for future use. The result is an unprecedented transfer of wealth and global web of high-level corruption and organized crime that has fueled global inequality, the rise of extremist groups, and the decline of democratic institutions all over the world.
OCCRP believes it takes a network to fight a network.
MISSION: By developing and equipping a global network of investigative journalists and publishing their stories, OCCRP exposes crime and corruption so the public can hold power to account.
VISION: A world where lives, livelihoods, and democracy are not threatened by crime and corruption.
As an investigative reporting platform for a worldwide network of independent media centers and journalists, OCCRP is reinventing investigative journalism as a public good. In the face of ri...sing costs and growing threats to independent media, OCCRP provides media outlets and journalists with a range of critical resources and tools including digital and physical security and allows those covering the most sensitive topics to work in teams with trusted editors.
While upholding the highest journalistic ethics and editorial standards, OCCRP develops and deploys cutting-edge tech tools to enable collaborative, secure data-driven investigations. With OCCRP Aleph, an investigative data platform powered by software we developed, journalists can search and cross-reference more than three billion records to trace criminal connections and patterns and efficiently collaborate across borders.
OCCRP also partners with advocacy groups, arming civil society with information to meaningfully press for justice and change, and unearths evidence that enables law enforcement to act.
We see a future where corruption and organized crime are drastically reduced and democracy is strengthened as a result of a more informed citizenry, increased accountability, and sharply higher costs for criminal activity.
