The communications manager plans, oversees, and implements media and editorial strategies that support the mission of Rice Architecture, which includes Rice Design Alliance (RDA), the community outreach arm of the school. This position uses long- and short-term strategies to promote the broad-ranging research, pedagogy, and programs of the school and RDA. The communications manager is creative, resourceful, proactive, and able to work both independently and collaboratively to effectively share the work of the school, encompassing the work of RDA, with multiple audiences. This is achieved by 1) actively engaging with faculty, students, and external constituents to maintain a deep awareness of their newsworthy activities and working to increase recognition of these activities amongst key external audiences; and 2) by delivering stimulating and dynamic communications that inspire audiences, constituents, and media.
Rice Architecture is a small but highly-ranked organization with a focus on design, including exceptional student work, world-class faculty research, and deep community engagement. The communications manager will use their editorial and creative writing skills to develop and shape an intelligent voice and energetic message for Rice Architecture and RDA, and will ensure the highest caliber communications, with consistent language, look, and tone across all public written materials.
The ideal candidate has experience managing communication and marketing within small organizations and across communication functions, including media and public relations, editorial, and social and digital media as well as managing public programs. This is a hands-on position. The successful candidate must be able to perform tactical responsibilities and take part in strategic planning as well as collaborate with diverse stakeholders, meet deadlines and be results-oriented.
This position is benefits-eligible and exempt, and the hiring range is $60,000-65,000
Develops and manages the communication and brand strategy for individual program(s) incorporating appropriate channels
Recommends, manages, and executes integrated marketing plans / programs and strategies to meet business objectives
Manages vendors on specific projects
Manages program budget, goals, and objectives in alignment with organizational goals
Manages market research and analysis used to make informed decisions regarding strategic marketing direction, product segmentation and customer targeting
Recommends marketing improvements based on findings
Writes, designs, and coordinates the production of communication and marketing materials
Performs all other duties as assigned
Develop, manage, and implement an annual communications plan, budget, and timeline in alignment with organizational goals and in consultation with key stakeholders
Develop and update regular communication reports and archive of media coverage and press clippings
Strategize, schedule, and coordinate all marketing campaigns, including special projects
Draft external correspondence for strategic communications; providing expert guidance on tone, audience, and content
Plan and coordinate marketing campaigns to increase awareness of the organization's work and profile, creating an influential presence in design and general press
Internal and External Affairs
Write, create, distribute, and edit captivating marketing materials, including press releases, press kits, text for website and printed materials, announcements, newsletters, and other promotional content
Act as team lead over all aspects of marketing and communications, including task delegation and goal setting, ensuring that tone, style guide, imagery, designs, and content are consistent and of exceptional quality
Use excellent judgment and discretion while sharing the mission and work of the school and Rice Design Alliance
Act as the primary liaison with Rice's Office of Public Affairs, sending relevant news, and providing feature ideas to their writing staff
Cultivate and maintain media contacts and partners, act as key contact for media inquiries, recommend media plans and placement for specific projects and initiatives
Stay current on the activities and news of the constituents of the organizations: alumni, board members, faculty, members, corporate partners, and students
Serve as support for crisis management issues that arise, tactfully and expeditiously providing both direction and resolution
Bachelor's degree required in communications, marketing, or related field
Three (3) years of experience in marketing and communications
Strong interest in architecture/design, urban studies, and/or civic issues
Familiarity with major architecture and design platforms, publications, and press outlets
Proficiency in website content management systems, Adobe Photoshop, and InDesign
Working within brand guidelines
Knowledge and use of the Chicago Manual of Style
Strong verbal and written communication skills including copywriting, copyediting, and presentation skills
Ability to draft and edit professional communications (web, email, brochures, social media, internal and external documents, reports)
Superb organization and creativity skills
Good analytical problem-solving skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and workflow management software
Ability to lead and work collaboratively within a team
Ability to generate and analyze communication analytics (Google Analytics)
