The primary role of Director of Communications is advancing Kellogg’s reputation as a premier business school through integrated marketing communication strategy and positioning.
Please note: Due to the nature of the field, and to support events on-site during evenings and weekends, this role may experience work outside the standard business hours. This role may also involve limited travel.
Partner closely with communications and marketing colleagues, Kellogg faculty and Kellogg leaders to raise awareness of the school and its faculty through earned, owned and social media, with an emphasis on results-driven media relations. Support ongoing competitive tracking, media monitoring and media metrics/assessment initiatives executed by the team.
Support the development and execution of executive positioning and visibility plans. This includes messaging and narrative development as well as results-focused media targeting, speaking engagements, organization and influencer engagement, and social media presence.
Develop, manage and help execute marketing, communication and stakeholder engagement plans to elevate awareness of Kellogg faculty research and thought leadership, including the school’s expertise in key thematic areas (i.e., finance, entrepreneurship, artificial intelligence, network science).This includes message development, media planning, stakeholder communications and partnership with Kellogg and Northwestern editorial, marketing and web teams on content planning and execution.
Develop and coach, reward and retain, and optimize talent. This position will be responsible for embedding Kellogg’s mission/strategy, leadership philosophy/approach, and performance driven-culture.
Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or related field, or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired.
Minimum of 8 years of experience in all aspects of integrated public relations media with increasing levels of responsibility within a complex organization.
Excellent strategic public relations experience and a proven track record of driving public relations campaigns and generating positive coverage that builds organizational reputation.
Senior-level experience developing communication strategy and related plans; demonstrated ability to achieve established goals and business objectives as a result.
Proven ability to counsel and advise executive and senior leaders in complex environment on effective strategic communication best practices and approaches.
In-depth understanding and sophisticated grasp of the earned, owned and social media landscape and demonstrated ability to drive measurable outcomes.
Experience managing and mentoring employees for optimal performance, building positive team dynamic and retaining and nurturing talent.

Demonstrated appreciation for the depth of issues facing MBA schools, and an interest and in-depth understanding of the research interests of faculty at Kellogg School of Management.
Demonstrated ability to work with all levels of academic, administrative and corporate management.
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, ability to develop strategy, messaging and positioning on complex topics and issues.
Demonstrated ability to work with and counsel C-level executives.
Proven good judgment and an ability to work collaboratively across functions and groups to achieve established objectives.
Ability to work with tact, diplomacy and discretion.
Strong organizational, project management skills and workflow coordination skills.
Exceptional attention to detail.
Demonstrated ability in handling multiple priorities and meeting tight deadlines.
Ability to quickly analyze and integrate information from relevant (and sometimes disparate) sources.
Demonstrated initiative and ability to self-start.
Fluency in MS Office suite.
Experience partnering with and mentoring rising star staff as well as more junior employees.
