POSITION DETAILS
The Advanced Science Research Center at The City University of New York Graduate Center of (CUNY ASRC) elevates scientific research and education at CUNY and beyond through initiatives in five distinctive, but increasingly interconnected disciplines: environmental sciences, nanoscience, neuroscience, photonics, and structural biology.
The CUNY ASRC promotes a collaborative, interdisciplinary research culture with renowned researchers from each of the initiatives working side-by-side with undergraduate and graduate students in the ASRC???s labs and core facilities, sharing equipment that is among the most advanced available. The CUNY ASRC invites and collaborates with researchers from all CUNY campuses to take advantage of its facilities and resources to advance interdisciplinary scientific research across the University. Importantly, the CUNY ASRC also engages in K-16+ STEM education, including pipeline programs, workforce development, and outreach to the public to promote science literacy, engagement, and empowerment and advance science-based policy and STEM education in partnership with local public schools, community groups, and CUNY community and senior colleges. The Communications Specialist will support efforts to communicate and promote awareness of the complex scientific discoveries that emerge from the ASRC and the center???s STEM outreach and community engagement work, with the goal of enhancing the profiles of ASRC, the Graduate Center, and CUNY. The work will be executed through a variety of communications avenues, including social media, website content, newsletters and traditional media outlets. This position will report to the ASRC???s Media Relations Manager.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Reads scientific abstracts and articles by ASRC researchers and creates lay friendly summary content about these articles for cross-platform social media posts in parallel with the Media Relations Manager???s press releases and other activities;
- Creates the ASRC???s social media strategy and content and schedule and monitors and manages the accounts;
- Produces content for and distributes ASRC newsletters;
- Assists with producing content for and editing and updating the ASRC website;
- Creates and disseminates flyers, invitations, signage, and other promotional materials as needed;
- Works with ASRC core facilities to create brochures and outreach materials;
- Designs graphics and templates for promotional materials;
- Films and edits short videos that highlight ASRC???s scientific discovery,STEM outreach and science communication news;
- Takes photos to be included for news announcements;
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. Final candidates must be fully vaccinated as of their first day of employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law.
Until further notice, this is a hybrid position, eligible to work remotely and work in the office. All CUNY employees must reside within a commutable distance to their campus (or office).
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's Degree and four years' related experience required.
A preferred candidate should possess:
- Journalism or science writing experience and be skilled in translating complex scientific news into lay friendly content that generates an understanding of and excitement about STEM research
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, graphic design tools, photo and video software, WordPress, and social media platforms
- Excellent attention to detail
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
