Job Summary
The University of Michigan Social Media and Public Engagement office produces awardwinning products and content that support the mission, vision, and values of the University of Michigan.
As Video Producer - Social Media/Digital Communications, you will leverage your video production experience, and technical and cultural fluency in major social media platforms (Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, etc.), to document, celebrate and engage with a diverse array of stakeholders across university accounts utilizing emerging trends and established methods of industry best practice. You will work closely with a team of digital, marketing, communications, and multimedia professionals to produce visual stories, vertical video, and other social video and multimedia content.
A passion for creativity, innovation, and trend adoption are key attributes for this role, and the ability to ensure deliverables are on time, within budget, and of the highest quality, is pivotal. From welcome back to commencement, and faculty interviews to public health guidance, you will be expected to create a wide array of engaging videos on a daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly basis.
You will work within the Office of the Vice President for Communications to elevate a global brand that serves as a standard of best practice across higher education. You will help to manage a talented team of content specialists and work in partnership with a wide array of cross-campus communicators, experts, and faculty. You will report directly to the Director of Social Media and Public Engagement.
On-campus work in Ann Arbor is required, including evening and weekend work when necessary. The Office of the Vice President for Communications offers flexible work arrangements for staff.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Film, edit, and post creative and engaging video and other multimedia content (gifs, memes, audio, etc.) for distribution across the University of Michigan social media properties, email, newsletters, leadership channels, television, and within the stadium.
- Explore campus and build relationships with students, faculty and staff as well as navigate and connect with members of our community on social media to generate story leads or find potential influencers or brand ambassadors. Be continuously following and studying social video trends.
- Manage visual consistency, innovation, and quality control across all U-M social media properties and the President’s Public Engagement initiative, including YouTube, TikTok, Instagram Reels, U-M Student Vlog Series and the Michigan Minds Faculty Podcast.
- Create and maintain social media editorial calendars that deliver compelling content aligned with the U-M brand.
- Communicate with cross-campus stakeholders to gather information and capture visual assets for events, meetings, news, and promotions.
- Create and manage an organizational system for all raw footage, photos, and audio captured, including production equipment and hard drives.
- Direct and/or train lower-level specialists and interns designers to maintain design standards and meet client communication needs.
- Work with actors, models, hosts, and the general public while providing creative direction
- Perform other duties as required or assigned that are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Background in videography, digital media, journalism, marketing, social media or another appropriate field
- 3+ years of combined social media, film, video, photography, animation, content creation, and digital strategy
- Experience shooting videos with a phone as well as using professional video equipment, including DSLRs or camcorders, audio and color correction, mics, and some lighting equipment
- A portfolio of engaging horizontal and vertical video content that exhibits an understanding of platforms and audiences
- Passion for using social media with innovative content, brand awareness and reputation management
- Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop, Premiere Pro and After Effects; experience with Illustrator and Audition
- Experience in podcast development, optimization, editing and publication
- Knowledge and success in creating TikToks, Instagram stories, gifs, and animations
- Time management and organizational skills
- Strong interpersonal, communication, presentation, and computer skills.
- Understanding of animation, storytelling, and character development techniques.
- Attention to detail, adaptability, and receptiveness to feedback and direction.
- Ability to work independently or with a team to develop animations and solve problems.

This position reports to the Director of Social Media and Public Engagement and is part of the University of Michigan central social unit (UMSocial) located within the Office of the Vice President for Communications.
