The Chronicle of Philanthropy is hiring a fellow to work with the opinion editor. This year-long, part-time position offers an opportunity to learn about opinion writing and editing and help shape the focus and content of op-eds on issues relevant to the nonprofit and philanthropic world — racial equity, the climate crisis, abortion, voting rights and much more.

The opinion fellow will work closely with the opinion editor, who will provide ongoing mentorship and direction. This includes coaching and guidance on how to edit and write strong op-eds and commission opinion writers.

Responsibilities include the following:

• Review and respond to opinion pitches and submissions.  
• Assist with editing op-eds and letters to the editor.
• Come up with opinion piece ideas and identify potential writers by monitoring social media, subscribing to philanthropy organization newsletters, and reading competitive publications.

Preferred qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree and some journalism experience, including working on a college newspaper and/or as an intern for a local or national publication. (Current college students may also be considered.)
• Demonstrated ability to distill complicated subjects and create a compelling story and persuasive argument.
• Interest in learning about nonprofits and philanthropy, and the issues relevant to effective coverage of the field.

Pay for this part-time position (18.75 hours a week) is $25,000 annually. We are based in Washington, D.C., although this position can be performed remotely. Those who live in the D.C. area will be able to work in the office one or two days a week.

This position is open to remote, from select states.
