The IU School of Medicine Dean's Office of Strategic Communications manages internal and external communications, including public and media relations, marketing and branding. The team also oversees and provides training and support for digital platforms, including the website, social channels, email messaging and more. This office seeks to unify communications for IU School of Medicine and deliver clear, consistent messages at a statewide level for all core audiences, including current and prospective faculty, students, staff, alumni, donors, community members and industry partners.

Job Summary
The Assistant Director of Research Communications is responsible for developing and executing a strategic plan for communicating and marketing the world-class research happening at IU School of Medicine. A combination of internal and external communications and marketing will be employed.
Department Specific Responsibilities
Managing research content on the IU School of Medicine website
Drafting research-focused news releases
Drafting internal newsletters
Drafting feature stories/blogs highlighting research
Drafting talking points/communications for executive research leadership
Developing marketing strategy for IU School of Medicine research enterprise
This position will take the lead in managing relationships with research-focused collaborators, both internal to the university and external.
General Responsibilities
Directs day-to-day operations for the marketing and communications function by providing oversight and direction within a department or large multi-faceted department.
Trains, evaluates, coaches, assigns work, and supervises the work of a team of Communications Generalists and/or Communications Assistants.
Manages relationships with various internal and external stakeholders; determines communications needs, projects, and programs to align with objectives and goals and supervises processes such as the development of communications timelines related to such initiatives.
Reviews drafts of communications and coaches on grammar, tone, branding guidelines, formatting, and other elements that may affect the perception of messaging or reputation of the department.
Responds to escalated and complex inquiries and requests and explains policies, procedures, and context of communications.
Regularly monitors relevant social media and news sites; researches relevant subject matter to increase knowledge in area(s) of specialty.
May assist in budget planning and administration for communications initiatives, including expenditures, revenue projections, and program costs.
Monitors industry trends and best practices and makes process and operational and strategic recommendations to manager.

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus.
