Job Title: Content Editor
Division: Communications & Brand Strategy
Reports To: Editorial Content Director
Location: DC HQ
The National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) is seeking a Content Editor. The content editor is a key member of the NAM communications team, writing stories about manufacturing policy and helping to produce the NAM’s daily newsletter for manufacturing leaders. The NAM is looking for an excellent writer who can handle a fast-moving environment, confidently interview CEOs and other leaders, and master the complexities of a wide variety of policy topics.
Join the NAM and Make an Impact in the Following Ways:
Writing: The content editor must be able to write clearly, engagingly and with enthusiasm about manufacturing and policy. Even when wrestling with dry or complicated topics, you should be able to cut out jargon and organize your thoughts with precision. Imagine a busy executive scanning your article before a meeting—does he or she get your point?
Speaking: The content editor will be expected to conduct interviews with manufacturing leaders at NAM member companies, as well as with policy experts within the organization. Are you confident and comfortable when talking to a CEO, and can you guide the conversation to get the details you need?
Diplomacy: Sometimes, you’ll need to hold the line on editorial choices, such as when banishing jargon or enforcing word limits. Other times, it will be smarter to acquiesce to an interviewee’s preferences. Do you know how to recognize either situation? Can you handle each of them gracefully?
Subject mastery: You must be able to learn the NAM’s policy positions well enough to avoid controversy and find good story opportunities. You must be plugged into the news cycle throughout the day, watching for developments of interest to the organization.
Policy experience: Have you worked in and around national public policy? Do you know how our government works (in general), and are you familiar with the basic arguments in major policy debates? While candidates without this background will be considered, it will be difficult to succeed in the role without it.
Initiative: Do you solve problems without being asked? Do you keep track of details without being reminded? Do you see an interesting article and think “hey, there may be a story in this”? Do you think your job can always be optimized?
The above list of responsibilities is representative of the position and is not intended to limit or preclude other responsibilities and tasks that may be associated with or added to the position.

The ability to speak confidently and diplomatically with colleagues at all levels of an organization
The ability to work effectively with a large and varied team, whether in person or remotely
