Reporting to the Assistant Director of Digital Communications, the Writer and Communications Specialist is a dynamic, journalistically minded, and deadline-oriented communicator, responsible for developing a range of content, including news and feature stories, profiles, Q+As, research communication, explainers and bulleted tips, and announcements, as well as other copy.
The Writer and Communications Specialist will be joining a communications team whose mission is two-fold: To share timely and actionable insights with educators, leaders, and families (as well as the broader general public), and to tell the stories of HGSE's remarkable campus community and its wide-ranging impact in education research, schools, and society. The successful candidate will be able to plan and generate compelling text-based content and may have familiarity with other digital storytelling formats — video, photography, audio, social, or a mixture of the above. They will be able to move nimbly between writing styles, equally adept at telling a story of impact, conducting a thoughtful Q&A, and translating research to practice in easily consumable ways. They will be well-versed in digital publishing practices, with an awareness of how to make content successful in an online environment.
All interested candidates should be excellent writers and reporters, with the ability to source, pitch, and create stories that highlight the impact and innovations of HGSE's programs, people, and events. They will be able to interview faculty and researchers, as well as graduate students and other academic leaders, and translate their work into compelling stories.
Candidates will bring a range of communications skills that would make them well-suited for the position: The successful candidate might have skills in video storytelling or might have a track record in audio and photography. Skills and experience in media relations — whether to craft pitches or take a reporter's inquiry — would also be beneficial.
The common ingredients we seek — regardless of one's specific communications background — are strong reporting and narrative ability, curiosity, willingness to pitch in and do excellent work, and a dedication to accuracy and high standards.
Candidates should have a background or a deep interest in education, as well as an understanding of higher education as the specific environment in which we work. Candidates should be able to form productive relationships with Harvard faculty, graduate students, and administrative leaders — possessing the tact and good judgment necessary to maintain those relationships.

Copyedit and proofread the work of colleagues as necessary.
Take photographs of events and people as necessary.
Support individual projects that may be assigned by the Editor in Chief of Ed. Magazine or by the Director of Marketing.
