Position Description: UCLA Strategic Communications (StratComm) brings UCLA's mission ad values to life by inspiring positive action as UCLA's lead storytellers, reflecting the multifaceted diversity of our university and surrounding communities. The Director, Arts Communications and Marketing, reports directly to the Chief of Staff, Strategic Communications and the chair of the Chancellor's Council on the Arts. A major focus of this position is the formulation and implementation of strategic communications initiatives, plans and events for the arts across UCLA.
This position will work closely with the Council to identify, report, write, amplify and elevate the artistic and cultural initiatives established by the Council and UCLA's leadership, and the efforts and successes that encompass the arts community at UCLA. Specific coverage areas will be defined by topics relevant to the moment and developed by StratComm and Council leadership. This position will also work to further cooperation and collaboration with marketing and communications units at the three professional arts schools, three arts organizations, the UCLA College and UCLA Institute of American Cultures to maintain consistent, quality messaging and marketing goals of the arts at UCLA, including leading the content development of the integrative arts website.
The successful candidate for this position must possess not only a passion for engaging narratives through news releases, but also be able to envision and implement innovative storytelling methods and promotional strategies, including hybrid and virtual marketing activations that directly engage audiences to interact with UCLA, and elevate it as a cultural arts destination in one of the most dynamic, diverse and creative cities in the world.
A strong understanding of stories appealing to earned media that will be strategically distributed to a variety of industry and mainstream news organizations, how to frame those stories and also the ability to partner with marketing and communication colleagues throughout UCLA and the broader Los Angeles arts community to effectively tell those stories, utilizing video, graphics, social media and in-person activations as important storytelling tools to increase engagement among earned media as well as the general public, is also essential.
The person in this position must be able to work effectively with academic leadership, including deans and department chairs, as well as faculty.
