The Reporter is responsible for engaging and informing users of wbur.org and WBUR 90.9 with an editorial focus on transportation. This position is responsible for covering news events, developments, and feature stories related to transportation as assigned by the Managing Editor, Deputy Managing Editor or the Executive Editor. The Reporter monitors daily news and makes the independent judgment on when, how, and whether to pursue a news story with input from editors. The Reporter is responsible for the complete execution of a story for digital, social and radio platforms, including conducting interviews, writing stories, posting and monitoring on social media platforms as well as monitoring comment threads of each news items produced. Additional duties include developing sources and contributing to story ideas as well as contributing to WBUR social media channels. Must have a strong comprehension of online news presentation. Must understand mission and tone of public radio. Must be a self-starter and prolific contributor.
Essential Functions:
Produce radio and digital content with emphasis on transportation, including but not limited to: writing, researching, gathering material.
Completely execute stories for digital publication and radio.
Independently judge news stories for appropriateness and publication.
Conduct interviews with sources, including but not limited to: developing sources, interviewing with sources, identify and profile key players and members of the community; transcribing interviews, and writing.
Develop story ideas, projects and sources with an emphasis on transportation by following news, community leaders, attending events and tracking ongoing regional transportation issues. Read many regional newspapers and journals.
Engage WBUR audiences online at wbur.org; at live events and on social media.
Participate in new initiatives, projects and series as assigned by the Managing Editor, Deputy Managing Editor or Executive Editor of News Content.
This position is covered under the terms of a collective bargaining agreement with SAG-AFTRA (https://www.bu.edu/hr/files/2022/01/SAG-AFTRA-rates-7.1.2022.pdf). The minimum annualized salary for this position is $74,492.00.
Bachelor's degree or relevant experience required, along with at least three to five years of related work experience.
