Position Description: KAZU is operated under the legal oversight of the University Corporation at Monterey Bay (University Corporation), an auxiliary of California State University Monterey Bay (University) and the California State University system. DEPARTMENT/PROGRAM SUMMARY KAZU is the flagship National Public Radio (NPR)-member radio station for the Monterey Bay Area, licensed in Pacific Grove, California, United States, by the University Corporation. The programming KAZU provides for this region includes twenty-four hour 'over-the-air' broadcasts and digital platforms that provide a vital service to the listening community through local news and current events at both the national and world levels. The station's key programming includes its website, 'kazu.org' as well as its two mobile applications, KAZU and NPR One. For national and international news, KAZU incorporates programming from NPR, BBC World News, PRI (Public Radio International) and APM (American Public Media). POSITION SUMMARYThe Associate General Manager (AGM), KAZU serves as the highest-ranking Programming and Content Officer, focusing on growing and serving KAZU audiences. Under general supervision of the station's General Manager, this position holds responsibility for all content creation, leads the content distribution strategy for multiple platforms, and is responsible for overall editorial leadership, planning, presentation and supervision. The AGM serves as a conduit between the radio programming department, corporate sponsorship, on-air announcers, and the news department. The AGM's primary role is to ensure the effective day-to-day operations of the station with the emphasis and priority placed on the station's programming and content requirements, and to assist the General Manager in general administration and operations of KAZU.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include. but are not limited to. the following: Leadership
Under the general supervision of the General Manager, provides day-to-day management of the station's facilities to include directly overseeing the station's news department and broadcasting and production operations to advance the mission, vision, values, strategic goals and operational requirements of KAZU.
Develops staff through team building, goal setting, mentorship, training opportunities, coaching, evaluation and recognition.
Assesses the department's structure and provides direct support in integrating effective roles, responsibilities, and workflows.
Identifies operational / process innovations as appropriate to optimize efforts.
Maintains proficiency to remain ahead of trends in content-making, technology, and distribution.
Promotes and maintains an atmosphere of excellent internal and external customer service within KAZU as a public radio station and NPR Affiliate.
Assists in developing and maintaining strong relationships with the community to include business, professional, political and University leadership.
Programming- Content-Broadcast Operations
Oversees the effective and efficient execution of content and programming
Oversee the News Director, and generally monitors and evaluates program content staff across defined platforms; identifies and integrates staff skills required to effectively execute content strategies.
Designs and executes strategies for expanding content offerings on existing and emerging platforms, with an aim of attracting new audiences and deepening engagement with existing audiences.
Identifies and incorporates recommendations applicable to KAZU's established program design and promotional selection to ensure the best delivery while utilizing best-practices for scheduling and audience metrics to measure results.
Oversees station's Morning Edition and All Things Considered hosts and provides training for on-air hosts as well as fill in on air as needed.
May serve as a regular author for newsletter content.
Membership / Fundraising
Works directly with the station's Membership Director to assist with the planning and development of annual Membership fundraising campaigns.
May participate on air as part of the 'on-air' pledge drive team during on-air fundraising activities.
Sales / Underwriting
Assists staff with fundraising strategies including identification, cultivation and solicitation of prospective and existing individual, institutional and business prospects, donors and underwriters.
Provides outreach to the regional audience through strategic marketing, events, and in-person and online/digital engagement.
Serves as the point person for marketing, coordinating with multiple staff to align internal and external marketing and promotion with editorial priorities toward the goals of audience development, growth of service and delivering value to KAZU consumers.
Administrative and Financial
Assist with operations and provide creative assistance to expand revenue including high-level donor solicitation.
Provides oversight for rules compliance with Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) and other station broadcasting certification requirements.
Identifies, incorporates and evaluates key metrics and trends to be shared within KAZU and to University Corporation and University.
Assists with establishing and managing the annual department budget.
Assists with developing, implementing and tracking strategies and goals for KAZU.
Assists in maintaining compliance with the station rules and regulations as a department within University Corporation.
Performs miscellaneous duties as requested by the General Manager.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Successful candidates must be familiar with all areas of broadcast station operations including administration, budget, fundraising, technology and engineering, FCC regulations and compliance, CPB requirements, audience and community relations, production, underwriting, and ensure compliance with all applicable governmental, NGO, Foundation and University policies. Experience with station growth through increased efforts and effectiveness of membership fundraising and business underwriting sales. Experience with on-air and station management responsibilities, including emergency operations and response; on-air pledge drives, and long-term strategic planning, including the establishment of a volunteer station support structure. Excellent oral and written communication skills, interpersonal and problem-solving skills; the ability to work in a changing environment; and familiarity with current technology practices and standards. A proven track record in operational, administrative, fiscal, personnel, and volunteer management; extensive fundraising experience
Minimum Qualifications: Education and Experience:Equivalent to a Bachelors degree in a field directly related to the job responsibilities; AND five years experience in broadcasting in non-commercial radio station operations. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for- year basis.
