The Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) seeks a Communications Officer (Writer/Editor), Social Science to join the FAS Editorial team, part of the FAS Communications and Marketing organization. The Social Science Communications Officer (Writer/Editor) will focus on storytelling and institutional writing that supports the agenda of the FAS and Divisional Social Science Deans, which includes support of faculty research, programs, new initiatives, and a robust portfolio of new and ongoing work. The Communications Officer (Writer/Editor) will deliver a range of dynamic communications, from storytelling and community messages for the Harvard Gazette to engagement opportunities and collaboration with the digital and multimedia teams.
Reporting to the Editorial Director of FAS, the Communications Officer (Writer) works across the Division of Social Science to collect information, research, and report stories, backgrounders, profiles, and other materials for both internal and external audiences.
The Communications Officer must:
Have a strong interest in complex issues, and interdisciplinary themes and be able to translate that into Harvard-related narratives
Have exceptional storytelling and writing skills
Be driven to develop and maintain relationships with faculty and students
Be flexible in working with deadlines and schedules, since Harvard's electronic news platforms often demand deadline-driven content
Have social media skills to gather and disseminate information as needed
Have some editing experience
Generate ideas and help to execute multimedia packages for Harvard websites, including conducting audio and video interviews.

Union: 00 - Non Union, Exempt or Temporary
BA/BS required along with at least five (5) years of news writing background or comparable journalism experience.
Proven organizational skills are a must, as well as ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Also required are excellent interpersonal skills and a demonstrated record of working both independently and as a team member. Patience and a sense of humor are essential, as the job requires navigating through multiple constituencies to ensure that all materials are produced with both internal and external audiences in mind.
